"Hey, you," the teenage boy says, putting his hand up on the locker beside hers and leaning his weight onto it. "What's up?"

Taylor sighs, letting an unconscious eye roll slip out. "I'm sure I'm heading the same place as you are." She pulls down her math textbook and slips it into her backpack, then grabbing the mesh shoe bag from the top shelf, containing her character heels. Inch-high Capezios that she got from the dance store her mom drove her to a couple of weeks ago. The ones she'd ordered from Amazon for last year's musical pinched her toes. She'd suffered through the show, but this year, she'd let it slip that they weren't very comfortable. Her mom had insisted on taking her for new ones, trying them on this time before buying them. Andrea had said that Taylor would need them for college anyway- and she isn't wrong about that.

"Today's the big day, huh?" Travis winks at her. "You excited?" Taylor tries to hard to be nonchalant about it. Like it hasn't been eating her alive from the inside out, absolutely all day. She tries to play it cool, as though she could've possibly forgotten.

"It's no different from any other day. We're going to run the vocals, block the scene, and go home. I know this is all new to you, but come on. Even you should've figured out that pattern by now."

Taylor does feel a little bit bad, deep down. Travis hasn't done anything to her, and she knows she's not being the nicest to him. Still, he's messed everything up. He's never done a single show before, play or musical. He decided he wanted to 'try something new' his senior year, to branch out from the football team in the off-season. And normally, Taylor wouldn't have cared about that. In fact, she'd have encouraged it. Every time an objectively cool and popular person joins a production, that means that all of their friends will come and sit in the audience. And that's not going to be any different this time. As the matter of fact, it seems like the whole school is riled up to come and see Mr. Popular as Georg Von Trapp in The Sound of Music.

But that's exactly the issue. He's playing the Captain. The male romantic lead.

It's all been planned out, since they were freshmen. Taylor and her best friend Gavin were supposed to be the leads when they were seniors. From the moment that the show was announced, everyone in drama club knew that Taylor and Gavin were going to be Maria and the Captain. They spent the months leading up to the auditions talking about it, practicing their music and the combination from the dance call, memorizing their monologues to perfection. Taylor didn't think there was any way that anything could possibly go wrong.

The illusion was shattered when the cast list came out. Taylor couldn't believe her eyes, as the matter of fact. She'd gotten Maria, just like she'd always dreamed of, but Gavin had been relegated to Uncle Max. A wonderful and fun role that he is killing- but it's not the lead.

Travis is good. She has to give him that. But she doesn't think she'll ever be able to trust him the way that she trusts Gavin. He's got such a reputation, has allegedly dated his way through half of the girls' basketball team and a quarter of the dance team. Taylor doesn't pay much attention to all that, but she's not immune to the rumors.

Gavin couldn't be more different. He's gay, but hasn't ever had a boyfriend. He cherishes Taylor's friendship endlessly, and would never do anything to hurt her. Or anyone, for that matter.

And the biggest thing that scared Taylor about taking on Maria wasn't any of the material. It was the fact that it was going to mean having her first kiss.

Sure, it would be a stage kiss, but it doesn't matter. Her lips were going to be on his lips. And she knew Gavin was going to make it safe and comfortable for her. They'd had a conversation about it before they'd even auditioned. He'd promised her; he'd be quick, gentle, and they'd both have a good laugh about it afterwards.
