Wednesdays POV:
I hear the shower turn off and the sound of shuffling in the bathroom before the door opens and Enid comes out in just a towel.
"Sorry, I forgot my clothes," she tells me, cheeks pink as she walks quickly to her room, trying to act casual but clearly flustered.
I get up and follow her, the floor cool beneath my feet. "Enid," I say, trying to get her attention.
"Yeah?" she answers, not looking at me as she rifles through drawers.
"Enid," I say again, a little more insistent, still walking closer to her.
"Yes, Wednesday," she says with a slight sigh, still rummaging through her clothes, trying to pick an outfit.
She turns around with a shirt in her hand. "Wednesday?" she says. In that moment, I realize how close we are. Our faces are only inches apart. Her face flushes deeper, and she quickly looks away.
"Enid," I say, my voice softer now.
"Wednesday," she replies, mimicking my tone with a nervous smile.
"I think we should talk," I say seriously, watching her carefully.
"About what?" she asks, clearly pretending nothing happened between us.
"You know what I'm talking about, Enid," I reply, taking a step closer. The space between us feels charged.
"What? About that... moment earlier? Is that what you mean?" she says, lifting her head slightly higher. We're eye-level now, her voice quieter.
"Look, I'm sorry if it made you uncomfortable. I don't know what came over me," I say, trying to sound calm, until I catch a smirk creeping onto her face.
"What are you smiling at?" I ask, slightly annoyed.
"You're kind of adorable when you're trying to be mad," she says, her voice teasing but soft as she looks at me.
Then she realizes what she just said. "Oh no, I didn't mean it like that. You're not cute. I mean, you are cute but not-no-I didn't mean-"
I cut her off by stepping even closer, and for a second, our eyes lock. Something shifts. She goes silent. We just stand there, close enough to hear each other's breathing. The air between us buzzes with something unspoken, something real.
She gives me a small, knowing smile as I step back and walk to my bed.
"Goodnight, Wednesday," she says quietly.
"Night, Enid," I respond, lying back on the pillow, heart racing.
Time skip: It's now 2:45 AM
I wake to a crash of thunder and a flash of lightning, followed by a small cry from the other side of the room. The storm outside is loud, wind howling against the windows.
"Enid," I say, loud enough for her to hear over the rain.
"W-Wednesday?" I hear her whisper, voice shaking. She's crying, her fear cutting through the dark.
"Are you alright?" I ask, already sitting up.
"I'm sorry I woke you," she whispers, her voice barely audible. "I just... storms really scare me. Always have."
"Come here," I say gently, glancing down and lifting the blanket.
I hear footsteps approach my bed, hesitant but trusting. Then I feel the mattress dip beside me.
"I'm sorry," she whispers again, her eyes fixed on the blanket like it's the only thing keeping her together.
I lay down. She watches me, confused by my calmness. I pat the space beside me.
Enid's POV:
Am I really about to sleep in the same bed as Wednesday? She still has a girlfriend, or did, at least, and yet here I am, lying down beside her, heart pounding like a drum. What am I doing? This is ridiculous. But part of me doesn't want to be anywhere else.
BOOM
A loud crack of thunder makes me flinch. I pull the blanket up to my chest.
"Hey, it's alright. I'm here," Wednesday says in a voice so gentle, I've only ever heard her use it when she was with Aurora, calm, warm, like a shield against the storm. It wraps around me like a blanket, quieting the fear thudding in my chest. She doesn't move or flinch, just stays there, steady and present. I never thought someone like her could feel safe, but right now, she's the only thing keeping me from falling apart.
I inch closer, turning to face her. Her presence is grounding. I wrap my arms around her and tuck my face into the curve of her neck, breathing in the faint scent of her perfume, sharp, clean, and strangely comforting.
TIME SKIP – she fell asleep, it's now 12:34 PM
I wake up wrapped in black fabric, warmth all around me. For a moment, I don't realize where I am. Then it hits me, I'm in Wednesday's bed. I lift my head and see her reading her book like nothing is out of the ordinary.
"Morning," she says, eyes not leaving the page.
"Good morning," I murmur, starting to sit up slowly. "Do you want me to get off? Because I can if you want."
"No, you can stay," she says quickly, almost too quickly.
"Okay... thanks, Wednesday. What time is it?"
She glances at the clock. "It's 12:35."
"WHAT?!" I shout, then immediately lower my voice. "What happened to school?"
"It's fine. It's just one day," she says, still reading.
BUZZ BUZZ
Wednesday's phone buzzes, and before I can stop myself, I glance at the screen and read the text:
"Hey Wednesday, I'm sorry but I've thought about it, and I don't think I can be with you anymore."
My stomach tightens. I hand her the phone.
"Oh... my bad, Wednesday. You just got broken up with," I say, trying to keep my tone neutral.
"Damn," she says quietly, putting the phone down and finally looking at me.
The silence that follows is heavy, but not uncomfortable. Just uncertain.
Something between us has shifted, and we both know it.
