Morticia's POV:
I sit in the living room with Gomez. A faint smile lingers from what Enid said earlier. I glance at the TV, about to speak, when the phone rings. Gomez looks at me. I shrug, pick up the phone.
"Hello?"
"Hi, is this Morticia Addams?"
"Yes. May I ask who's calling?"
"This is the hospital."
The smile fades.
"Is everything alright?"
"I'm sorry, ma'am... your daughter has been stabbed."
My hand stills mid-air.
"What?"
"She's in surgery. We... we don't know her condition yet."
"I... I'll be there shortly."
I hang up.
"Everything alright?" Gomez asks, concern furrowing his brow.
I shake my head, already rising. "We need to go. Now."
He pauses the TV. "What's wrong, Tish? Who was it?"
"The hospital. Wednesday, she's been hurt."
Without another word, he's moving. Helping me to the car.
"Lurch. Hospital. Fast." Gomez commands. Lurch only nods, and we're off, the tyres screeching against the driveway.
I sit silently, composed, though my fingers grip Gomez's hand like a vice. "She'll be fine," he whispers, though I wonder who he's trying to convince.
*at the hospital*
Before the car fully stops, I'm already inside. Enid and Pugsley sit in the waiting room. Pugsley runs to me. I hold him close, eyes flicking to Enid. She's staring at the wall, dried tears on her face.
Gomez enters moments later, his focus landing on Enid. He quietly takes the seat beside her.
"What happened?" he asks.
Enid turns to him, pain shadowing her features. "She saved him," she says, glancing at Pugsley. Fresh tears threaten. Gomez pulls her gently into a hug. She tries, but fails, to muffle the sobs.
I sit beside them. Pugsley clings to me. Lurch joins us, silent, sombre.
"Is Wednesday alright?" he asks. I only shake my head. He nods, understanding, and says nothing more.
Like 5 hours later...
"Addams?"
I rise carefully, not waking Pugsley. "Yes, that's me," I answer, my voice hoarse.
"She's out of surgery. You can see her now, but... be warned. She's still a bit loopy."
I nod, return to my family. "Come on," I whisper, gently rousing them. Only now do I notice Pixie curled up asleep too.
They all stir. Enid's up first. "Is she okay?"
I nod and beckon her to follow.
At the nurse's desk "Room 265." The nurse calls, nodding as we walk past
Enid quickens her pace as we approach the room. She reaches the door first but waits for me. We enter together.
Wednesday lies in bed, pale but alive. Enid rushes to her side. I take the opposite.
Wednesday's eyes flutter open, and the faintest smile curls on her lips. "Ah... Mother. You didn't let me die alone. How terribly considerate."
"Yes, my darling. It's me." I smooth back her hair, ignoring the ache twisting beneath my ribs.
Wednesday gestures me closer, lowering her voice as though sharing a secret with the crypt. "And who's the beautiful spectre haunting my bedside?"
Enid chuckles, though she flushes pink.
"That's your girlfriend, dearest," I remind her gently.
Wednesday's dark eyes widen. "My girlfriend?" she repeats, as if the words are foreign. "I must've been more concussed than I thought to have secured something so... luminous."
I nod.
Wednesday turns her gaze back to Enid, studying her as though she might dissect her later. "Hello... my imminent cause of death."
"Hi, Willa," Enid says softly, clearly understanding this is Wednesday's way of being sweet.
Wednesday's expression softens, her gaze slipping lazily down Enid's figure. "You're really quite... disturbingly pretty."
"She is, isn't she?" I agree.
Gomez, Pugsley, and Pixie enter. Wednesday brightens unnervingly fast.
"Ah. Father. My favourite grave-robber," she greets Gomez, smiling in that unsettlingly serene way she gets when she's genuinely pleased.
"My little viper," he says, bending down to kiss her forehead.
She reaches for Pugsley next. "Brother of mine. Alive still? Shocking."
He hugs her gently.
"Psst?" she whispers, eyes darting toward Enid again.
"What?"
"She's my girlfriend." She points as though making a formal accusation.
Pugsley smiles and backs up.
Wednesday's attention shifts sharply as she notices Pixie. "It's a dog," she announces reverently. Pixie jumps up eagerly. Wednesday kisses the dog's head as if bestowing a dark blessing.
"Settle, Wednesday," I murmur.
Wednesday turns her attention back to me. "Mother... what's my girlfriend's name again?"
"Enid."
Wednesday nods gravely, like receiving an ancient verdict. "Tell her... she's very pretty. I fear I may pass out before I can say it properly."
I smile faintly. "She thinks you're very pretty."
Enid leans in, brushing Wednesday's hand. "I think you're... hauntingly pretty too."
Wednesday's gaze drops to her lap, fingers toying with her fingers as though plotting something. I remember the rings in my pocket and hand them back.
"I brought these for you."
Wednesday's smile becomes something dangerous and proud as she slides them on. "Look. I've reclaimed my talismans." She shows them off like trophies, first to me, then to the dog.
I step back, settling into the sofa. The room dims, quiets. Enid eventually edges closer, her hand finding Wednesday's under the blanket.
Wednesday watches her as though Enid is her favourite corpse brought back to life.
Enid's phone buzzes. She silences it with a sheepish smile. "Sorry about that."
I merely nod.
Knock knock.
"Sorry, only one person can stay overnight," the nurse says gently.
I rise. "Enid... would you like to stay?"
"Are you sure?"
I nod. "Of course."
"I'd love to, thank you."
"I'll bring a mattress—"
"No need. I'll take the sofa."
The nurse nods and leaves.
I kiss Wednesday's forehead. "I'll see you tomorrow."
Wednesday's smile is sleepy, but sly. "Of course. I wouldn't dare perish without notice."
I cross to Enid, press a kiss to her hair. "Thank you, Enid."
She smiles. "Of course."
At the door, I pause. "I love you two."
Wednesday answers at once: "I love you, in the way one loves the inevitable end of things."
Enid hides her soft smile. "I love you too."
I give a final nod and leave.
