Wednesdays POV:
"The surgery was successful."
"Thank you, thank you so much. I'll be there as soon as possible."
I hang up and rush to my car, a small smile tugging at my lips. She's alive.
Tears prick my eyes, but I ignore them as I start the engine. I speed down the street, fast enough to make it there quickly, but not enough to draw attention. The light turns green just as I reach it, and I take that as a sign. A good one.
The hospital comes into view, and I feel my heart pound in anticipation. I press down on the accelerator and take the turn into the parking lot. I find a space quickly, park crookedly, and jump out, not caring in the slightest. I lock the car with shaking hands, tears slipping freely down my cheeks.
Inside, I approach the receptionist with urgency. "Enid Sinclair. Room 315."
She gives me a nod and I hurry down the hallway.
When I reach the room and push the door open, my breath catches in my throat. Enid is sitting up in the bed, a little pale, but smiling. Alive.
Her face lights up the second she sees me. "Enid," I whisper, rushing to her side. Relief floods me as I kneel by her bed and gently hug her, careful not to press against her back.
"I told you everything would be okay," she says, a teasing smile curling her lips.
I laugh softly, overwhelmed with emotion. "I missed you."
"I was gone for like four hours," she giggles.
God, I missed that laugh. "Yeah, that's four hours too long," I reply, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear as I pull back.
A nurse steps into the room, glancing between us. "You girls alright? Need anything?"
I look at Enid and smile. "I've got everything I need."
The nurse smiles warmly and leaves us alone again.
"That was really cute, but I wanted a drink," Enid teases.
I chuckle, reaching for her hand. "When do you get out?"
"As soon as they make sure the stitches don't come out."
"How about I take you to McDonald's afterward?"
Her entire face lights up again. "Really?!"
I nod, and she throws her arms around me again. I hold her close, wishing I never had to let go.
—
"And sign here, please," the nurse says.
I scribble my name on the release form, and she takes the clipboard back. "Okay, have fun, but not too much fun."
Enid grins and grabs my hand as we walk out of the hospital together. Freedom. Relief.
When we reach the car, she hands me the special pillow they gave her. I attach it to the seat and help her in gently, making sure she's comfortable. Then I get in and start the engine.
My hand finds her thigh, just needing to feel her there, alive, with me. The tightness in my chest finally starts to ease.
As promised, I head for McDonald's.
"What do you want?" I ask.
"Um, can I get a 6 chicken nugget meal and a McFlurry?"
I nod, pulling up to the machine.
"Hiya, what can I get for you today?"
"Hi, could I get a large 6 chicken nugget meal and a Malteser McFlurry, please."
Malteser's her favourite, for some reason. I prefer the Oreo one.
"Okay, pull up to the next window, please."
Luckily, there's no one in front of us.
"Hiya, that'll be £7.45."
I tap my card. Beep.
"Thank you, pull up to the next window."
The girl slides the machine away and smiles. A guy at the next window hands us our drinks.
"Food'll be out in a minute," he says. "How old are you guys?"
"Seventeen. I'm turning eighteen soon," I reply.
"Ooh, can't wait for that," he says, winking.
He turns around, scribbles something on the receipt, and drops it in the bag before handing it to us. We drive off and park nearby.
I check the receipt. "Call me on your birthday? Here's my number ;)"
My jaw clenches. I step out of the car and spot him by the side door, still wearing that smug grin.
I offer a faint smile, then flick my lighter and set the receipt on fire. His smirk drops.
I toss the burning paper into the bin. Flames rise.
His eyes go wide. I smirk and climb back into the car.
"You want one?" Enid asks, holding a chicken nugget near my mouth.
"Does it have sauce on it?"
She shakes her head. I open my mouth, and she feeds it to me.
She grins as I chew. I didn't know peace like this was possible.
We head back to Nevermore. There's an ambulance at the front, loading someone in.
"Oh no, what happened?" Enid asks, trying to peek through the crowd.
"I beat the shit out of Yoko," I say calmly.
"Oh." She blinks. "Well... did you kill her?"
"No. Sadly."
She nods and pops another nugget into her mouth.
----------------------------------
We get in the lift and she stares at me.
"What?"
"I wanna sit."
"Then sit."
She pouts. "I wanna sit like last time."
I sigh and take the seat. She smiles brightly and plops down onto my lap.
I sigh again, but this time it's amused.
Whoever else is in the lift? I'm sorry.
But not really.
