Wednesday's POV:
I walk out of the bathroom to see Enid grabbing the last few things from her wardrobe and stuffing them into a duffle bag. She's moving around the bed with practiced ease, her headphones blaring some energetic pop song I can't quite place. I find myself watching her, completely transfixed, until I catch my own reflection in the mirror, smiling. Gross.
Too late, though. She turns around and catches me mid-soft expression. Her face flushes red and she rips off her headphones, turning away with a groan and covering her face.
"That's so embarrassing," she mumbles.
I step toward her and gently pull her hands from her face. "You looked... endearing," I say, completely deadpan, as if the word pains me to admit.
She peeks at me, eyes wide and shining in the light. "Really?"
"You're insufferably adorable, and it's frankly annoying."
Her smile turns smug and she pulls me closer. I smirk and lean in, just about to kiss her—
*KNOCK KNOCK*
I groan and pull away. Enid lets out a frustrated sigh.
I open the door to find Lurch looming on the other side.
"I'm here to help," he rumbles. His voice is gravelly, low, he only really talks around me. He's like an older brother who hates small talk.
"Yeah, the bags are over there. I'll help you-"
"No. I've got it, Piglet."
I glare up at him. He just lets out a dry chuckle, completely unfazed. Enid appears at my side, confused.
"Come on, amor," I say, holding out my hand. She shakes her head, smiling as she takes it.
We step into the limo and Enid gasps, immediately obsessed with how expensive it looks. I slide in and wait for Lurch. The door slams, the engine purrs to life.
I pull out my phone, connect it to the speaker, and pick a song. 'Sweet' by Cigarettes After Sex starts playing. Enid looks at me, wide-eyed.
I crack the window, letting the cold air hit my face. Then I feel a familiar weight on my lap, Enid straddling me, head tucked beneath my chin. I prop my feet up and close my eyes.
...sleep...
I jolt awake from a sharp turn. Instinctively, I grip Enid and slam my foot to the floor.
"Lurch!" I shout, banging on the divider.
"Sorry, Piglet," he grunts from the front. Of course he's amused.
Enid stirs, just as 'Lovers Rock' by TV Girl starts to play. She sits up and looks at me, her voice soft.
"I love this song."
She nods to the beat, eyes closed.
(While the others talked)
I watch her, totally still.
(We were listening to Lovers Rock,
In her bedroom, in her bedroom. And if you start to kiss)
Her eyes open, meet mine.
(And the record skips, flip it over, and move a little closer)
We lean in, lips brushing-
The door flies open.
"Oh shit." Lurch quickly shuts it again.
Enid bursts out laughing, sliding off my lap. I open the door again to find Lurch unloading the bags with a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
I take Enid's hand and guide her inside.
Just as I'm about to knock, the door swings open. My mother stands there with her usual unreadable smile.
"Hello, Mother."
"Hi Wednes-"
She's cut off by my father throwing the door open wider and rushing toward us.
"Oh, my little storm cloud! We missed you!"
""I... suppose the absence of your presence was not entirely unendurable," I murmur, my voice softer than I intended, as if the admission weighs more than I'd like to acknowledge.
That pauses them, then their faces soften. My father pulls me into a hug, temporarily disconnecting me from Enid. When he lets go, his eyes are watery.
"And who's this?" my mother asks.
"Enid Sinclair. My girlfriend."
My mother's brows rise for a second before she offers Enid a kind smile. My father jumps in immediately.
"Oh! My little storm cloud has found her rainbow!"
He hugs Enid tightly, and I see her eyes well up. Her family never hugged her. This is probably her first time being welcomed like this.
We head inside. The living room is warm, inviting. We talk for a while until Lurch strolls in, bags in hand.
"Enid's bags going in your room, Piglet?" he asks, monotone, but that smirk is back.
I glare. "Yes."
He grunts and disappears again.
I settle back on the sofa, arm around Enid. She leans into me, checking her phone.
"Aw, they look just like us when we were that age," my father says.
I glare at him. Enid elbows me.
"What?"
"Don't glare at them."
I roll my eyes but obey.
............dots............
After a while, Enid nudges me.
"Can we go upstairs?"
"Yeah."
"We're gonna go to bed now," I announce.
My father hums, focused on his game.
"Okay, darling, love you," my mother calls.
I hesitate. Enid nudges me again.
"I love you too," I mutter.
My mother's eyes glisten.
We make it halfway down the hall before Pugsley barrels toward us.
"Sis!"
He tackles me into a hug. I half-hug back.
"Hey Pugsley."
He looks at Enid and waves. "Hi."
"This is Enid. She'll be staying a couple weeks."
He nods, beaming, and runs off.
We step into my room.
