Enid's POV:
We get out of the lift and start walking to the dorm. Surprisingly, my back doesn't hurt as much as I thought it would. When we get to the door, Wends unlocks it and holds it open for me.
"Lady's first," she says with a dramatic bow, one hand gesturing inside.
I chuckle and walk in, heading straight for her bed while she goes to grab something. I lay on my side, waiting for her to return.
... yippee ...
She comes back holding my favourite jumper of hers, and I can't help the smile that spreads across my face as she walks toward me. I sit up and tug off the shirt I was wearing, noticing the light blush that colours her cheeks. Still flustered, she hands me the jumper.
I slide it on and lay back again. "I preferred you without it," she mumbles, turning quickly toward the TV.
"I heard that."
"I know."
I grin as she moves the TV closer, then hands me the remote before disappearing to grab something else. When she returns, she's got two controllers.
"You said you wanted to play Minecraft with me," she says, laying beside me like it's the most natural thing in the world.
My grin grows wider as I remember saying that. I grab the controller and boot up the game.
"And you use this one to hit," I explain, demonstrating. She nods and starts to move around.
We play for a while, the soft glow of the screen lighting our faces. Eventually, night starts to fall in the game.
"We need shelter," I say.
"Why?"
"Because monsters come out at night."
She nods again and starts building a small wooden hut with her gathered supplies.
... no more ...
Eventually, I power off the PlayStation and try to shift back into a comfortable position without waking her. As I set the controller down, it makes a soft thud. I freeze, silently begging the universe not to let it wake her. She stirs but doesn't wake. I breathe out a slow sigh and wrap my arm around her, letting my eyes drift shut.
Knock knock
"For fuck's sake," I mutter, eyes snapping open as Wends blinks up at me. She shifts so I can get up and answer the door. Huffing, I swing it open to find two police officers and Miss Weems standing there.
"Can I help you?" I ask, irritation clear in my voice for waking Wednesday.
"We'd like to talk to you and Miss Addams about Yoko Tanaka," the officer says.
I rub my eyes and step aside to let them in. Wednesday looks at me, confused.
"It's about Yoko," I yawn.
"Do you know anything about how Miss Tanaka got into this state?"
The officer holds out a picture, and I walk to the sofa to sit beside Wends. I glance at the photo, Yoko looks messed up. Like, really messed up. My heart drops a little. What did Wednesday do?
I look at her, but her expression is blank.
"No, we don-"
"Yes, I did it," she states calmly, cutting me off.
The officers' eyes widen.
"Can I ask why?"
She squints at his name tag before answering. "Well, Officer Kane, she put my girlfriend into a coma. And respectfully, sir, I don't mess around when it comes to my loved ones."
She leans into me, and I feel a little more grounded.
Kane nods and turns to his partner, who still hasn't taken his eyes off Wends. He looks about eighteen, and I really don't like the way he's staring. I wrap my arm around Wednesday and pull her closer. The guy snaps out of it and looks down as Kane turns back around, laptop in hand.
"Your headteacher gave us access to the hallway cameras."
He hands the laptop to Weems, who types something and gives it back. Kane turns the screen to us.
It shows me walking toward the stairs and waving at Yoko.
I pause.
Yoko follows behind me on the screen. I look away, not wanting to relive it, but Wednesday keeps watching. I can feel the tension radiating off her, her jaw tight.
When it ends, Kane turns the laptop back to himself. "Given this footage, you can press charges or request a restraining order."
Wednesday looks at me, and I give her a small nod. I can't really speak right now.
He pulls out some papers and radios in. "Since you two aren't eighteen, we'll need a parent or guardian to sign."
"My parents won't," I murmur. Wends opens her mouth, but Weems cuts her off.
"I'll sign."
We both look at her.
"Believe it or not, I care about you both," she says, signing the form.
Kane nods. "She'll be expelled immediately."
We follow them outside, and that's when we hear yelling.
"NO! I WANT TO SEE HER! I LOVE HER! YOU CAN'T KEEP HER FROM ME! WEDNESDAY!"
It's Yoko.
We rush toward the commotion and find teachers holding her back. She's trying to force her way upstairs. When she spots Wednesday, her eyes light up with a kind of desperation that makes my skin crawl.
"WEDNESDAY, COME ON, LET ME UP! I'M YOUR BEST FRIEND! I LOVE YOU! PLEASE!"
She breaks free and bolts toward Wends. Before anyone can react, she grabs her face, and kisses her.
I tear her off and shove her backward, heart pounding in my chest. The officers hesitate, stunned.
I don't.
I punch her.
Hard.
She screams, and the officers grab her, dragging her toward their car.
"THIS ISN'T OVER! I LOVE YOU, WEDNESDAY!"
Wednesday wipes her mouth, and I take her hands gently. She gives me a soft smile.
Weems walks up to us. "I'm giving everyone a couple of weeks off to recover and get ready."
I pull her into a hug. "Thank you, Miss Weems."
She hugs me back. "It's no problem, sweetheart."
She heads back toward her office. Wends and I go back inside to start packing.
... almost done ...
I'm just about finished when I remember, I can't go home. My mom still hates me. I put the last item in my suitcase and sit on the bed.
"Amor?"
I look up. "Yeah?"
She walks over and sits on my lap, making my cheeks go red.
"Would you like to stay with me this break?"
"That would be great," I whisper, and she hugs me tightly.
I return the hug, glancing at the ring on my finger. "Are you gonna let your parents know?"
She nods but doesn't move.
I chuckle and lie back, pulling her with me. She snuggles into my neck, her hand finding mine.
