Jimin sat on the edge of his bed, rubbed his slightly puffy eyes due to sleep. The sounds of laughter and chatter from outside his window were a distant hum, a reminder of a world he never quite felt a part of.
The boy got off from bed and made his way to bathroom to get ready for his school.
Jimin had always been the quiet one, the boy who preferred the company of his thoughts over the bustling world outside. Shy and introverted, he found solace in the small apartment he shared with his cousin, Seokjin. his constant, his anchor. Jimin's parents were often away, their demanding jobs keeping them out of town for most of the time. Despite their wealth, Jimin never felt the warmth of their love. They provided him with everything material, but the emotional void remained.
Jimin's childhood had been marked by a series of unfortunate events, leaving deep scars on his psyche. The bullying he endured at his first school only compounded his trauma, making him wary of people. He built walls around himself, never talking to strangers and avoiding physical contact. Trust was a luxury he couldn't afford.
Amidst this sea of loneliness, there was one bright spot in Jimin's life: Cha Eunwoo. Eunwoo was everything Jimin was not. Outgoing, confident, and universally liked, Eunwoo seemed to navigate life with an ease that Jimin envied. They shared a few classes, and Jimin would often find himself stealing glances at Eunwoo, his heart racing with an unfamiliar emotion. It was a crush, his first, but Jimin was too scared to admit it, even to himself.
He remembered the first time he saw Eunwoo. It was during the beginning of the school year, and Eunwoo had walked into the classroom with a radiant smile, instantly making friends. Jimin was captivated by his charisma, the way he seemed to light up the room. He longed to be near Eunwoo, to be part of his world, but the fear of rejection held him back. What if Eunwoo didn't like him? What if he became just another bully?
Seokjin, perceptive as always, noticed the change in Jimin. he saw the way his eyes lit up when he talked about Eunwoo, the subtle shifts in his demeanor. One evening, as they sat on the couch watching TV, he turned to him and said, "Jimin, you know it's okay to have feelings, right? It's okay to like someone."
Jimin's face flushed. "I don't know what you're talking about," he mumbled, focusing intently on the screen.
Jin smiled gently. "You don't have to hide from me. I just want you to be happy."
For a moment, Jimin considered confiding in his. But the fear was still too great. Instead, he nodded and changed the subject, burying his feelings once more.
Days turned into weeks, and Jimin continued to admire Eunwoo from afar. He collected small moments, like the time Eunwoo helped a classmate with their homework or when he made the entire class laugh with a witty remark. These snippets of Eunwoo's kindness and charm became precious treasures in Jimin's heart.
One day, fate intervened. Jimin was struggling with his math homework, his mind a tangled mess of numbers and frustration. Out of nowhere, Eunwoo approached him, his usual bright smile in place.
"Need some help?" Eunwoo asked, his tone friendly and genuine.
Jimin's heart raced, and he could barely manage a nod. Eunwoo pulled up a chair and sat next to him, their proximity making Jimin's palms sweat.
"Math can be tricky," Eunwoo said, glancing at Jimin's notes. "But once you get the hang of it, it's not so bad."
For the next hour, Eunwoo patiently explained the concepts, his presence both calming and exhilarating. Jimin found himself relaxing, even daring to ask questions. When they finally finished, Eunwoo pat him on the back, a gesture that made jimin freeze for a second before he realized it was meant as encouragement.
"See? You're getting it," Eunwoo said warmly.
Jimin's cheeks turned pink, and he managed a small smile. "Thanks, Eunwoo. I appreciate it."
From that day on, Eunwoo started to make more frequent attempts to talk to jimin. Slowly, jimin began to open up, the fortress around his heart crumbling bit by bit. He still didn't know if he could ever confess his feelings, but having Eunwoo as a friend was more than he had ever dared to hope for.
Jimin's world, once painted in shades of gray, began to show hints of color. And though the road ahead was uncertain, with Eunwoo by his side, Jimin felt a glimmer of hope for the first time in a long while.
