Mom was acting strange the past few days. For some reason she took now and then some off my clothes away. When I asked her what she was doing she shrugged and said that she was doing the laundry. Luckily, she hadn't took away the black shirt that John brought me. Or even worse, washed it. The scent of chocolate cookies was fading away but with that I found another scent in it, and I can only describe it as home. When I close my eyes I see woods, I can almost smell the pine of the trees. Often, I wake up and the last thing I remember are green eyes. For some reason I miss those eyes, but I don't know from where I should know them. But they feel so familiar.

I'm sitting under a tree, writing in my notebook or I pretend I'm doing it. I'm watching uncle Duncan. I met him a month ago for the first time and every time he looks at me, he smiles but his eyes never smile. Every time I catch him looking at me, he seems to be in pain. Maybe it has something to do with what mom is doing. I got to know my father a bit better but he's a very closed off. And always working. I don't know why but I don't trust him for some reason. I don't like the look in his brown eyes. Even though Duncan has the same eyes. When I look in Duncan's brown eyes I see— sadness, but most of all kindness. I feel safe when I look in Duncan's eyes.

Later that night mom wakes me up, "Nell, shh—, we need to go girl," she whispered.

"What? Why? Where are we going mom?" I asked her.

"Shh, not now. I tell you later. When we are further away."

I frown but follow her out through the dark hallway anyway. Seeing the bags in the car I understand that we are leaving for a while, and I trust her that she has a good reason to do so.

"What about dad?" I whisper when she starts the car.

"He knows that I'm leaving. I told him that I'm visiting my sister."

"Your sister? I thought you didn't speak to her?"

"He doesn't know that. I needed an excuses to leave and visiting a sister was the perfect excuse," she sighs and looks for a second to me. "He doesn't know that I took you with me. I promise that I will tell you everything. No more secrets, I promise Nell."

"Okay."

"Try to get some sleep while it's still dark."

2 hours later, I had woken up when the car stopped at a breakfast bar. After breakfast and using the facilities, we bought some snacks and drinks for the rest of the road, since we still have a 6 hour drive before us. Soft music was playing on the radio, and I rolled down my car window so I could enjoy the pleasant morning breeze. I smiled when one of my songs was on the radio. I reached towards the radio to turn the sound up a bit when mom jerked in her seat causing us to go off the road. I braced myself yelling, "Mom!" She hit the brakes making the car stop on the side of the road and turned her blinkers on. She was gripping the steering wheel with both her hands hard and closed her eyes. "What's going on mom?" I asked worried.
