Eve"You keep your focus and say no to all boys, Emori Dove. You hear me??"
"Yes..." I answered my father, also known as Sargent Devereaux, who's really just a control-freak contractor. Withholding a groan and suppressing an eye roll, I stared out of the window, mindlessly watching palm trees and cars swoosh by from the backseat.
Despite what I'd initially thought, apparently I'm going to have to hear this speech at the start every year.
According to my parents, drilling it into me my freshman year just wasn't enough. It's too bad it's all going in one ear and out of the other though. I mean, how else am I supposed to find someone before graduation?
I've got a future to secure here.
"Don't be doin' all that partying either-"
"Especially if your work isn't done first," my mother added.
"Yeah, if she's doing any work at all," my ten year old brother chimed, sitting on the other end of the backseat. He then giggled mischievously once I reached over to poke his neck. "Ow- Maaa-"
"Eve, quit abusing your brother."
"Well tell him to shut his face," I muttered, thumping Gabe's forehead once he stuck his tongue out at me. "And alright Dad, I hear you."
"Do you?" He asked over his shoulder, dressed in a plaid button down, while driving. "Because you can't afford to screw up Emori, this opportunity don't get handed to just anybody-"
"I know Dad," I grumbled softly, closing my eyes with a mental head shake. "You've told me a million times, I get it. Be successful and don't disappoint, you got it, alright?"
Looking over her shoulder at me from the passenger seat, my mom made a kind face. "That's not what he means Evie..."
"Sure sounds like it-"
"Gabe," she cut her eyes, not able to see him behind her seat. Though he felt the scolding from her voice alone, having him purse his lips while scrolling on his tablet. "He means stay focused and don't get distracted," she then said to me. "Because he cares, a lot, and wants you to have the life of your dreams. We both do sweetie..."
"What your mother said," my dad then muttered quietly, having my mom glance his way with a grin.
"I know I know," I sighed, peering back at the blend of green, white, and blue through the square glass. "I know guys, thanks..."
A text vibrated my phone on my thigh once a hint of silence surrounded the family car, a red RAM SUV. Figuring it was likely the group chat, I couldn't help my subtle grin.
