Loud cheers of joy could be heard as I zoned out for the almost one hundredth time. My best friends looked at me with looks of encouragement as they knew I needed it right about now. My social battery was almost at an all-time low. I wanted to go home and preferably be alone, but I was tired of being in this constant mood of gloom.
I know you're probably wondering why I'm in such a foul mood. Well, my best friend Myles, well, soon to be ex-best friend, had taken my virginity, and he wants to act like I'm some kind of stranger to him. My phone calls are declined, my text messages ignored, and my attempts to talk to him are shut down. We've been through too much for him to treat me like this.
As I looked down at the large field, it didn't register to me that the game was over and clearly, my school had won. Spotting him, I saw him smile as his girlfriend ran into his strong arms. I've known him since our diaper days; he's falling in love with her. I see that glow in his eyes. Tears wanted to be released, but I held them in for some reason I was a little more emotional than usual.
I watched as his eyes finally left hers, and I could see those brown eyes scan the crowd looking for what seems to be me. I watched as his eyes met mine, his eyes softened at the sight of me, and I had to use all of my willpower to look away from him.
My other two friends softly told me that they're about to go. As I got up to go with them, I didn't realize Myles' huge form following us. A gentle yet huge hand enveloped my wrist to get my attention. Turning around startled, I was met with the brown orbs of Myles.
"Can I talk to you for a sec?" his deep voice asked.
I could see Myra and Tanya ready to come to my defense, but I didn't want to cause a scene, so I gave them a knowing look to which they responded with head nods. Myles softly guided me to a room. When I turned around to close the door, I started to fiddle with my fingers, waiting to hear what he had to say to me.
"Imma be straight with you. I hate to see you sad, but you gotta understand I'm not gay and I was drunk. We both were under the influence. I apologize if you thought something could come out of what happened, but I don't swing that way," he said.
The tingly feeling in my nose returned as tears clouded my vision. As I tried to calm myself down, nothing was working. I was a sobbing mess.
"Why are you telling me all this? You should've left me alone. You came up to me, saw someone dancing on me, and all of a sudden you became possessive as if you own me. You know how I feel about you, yet you keep finding new ways to hurt my feelings."
"You can't get mad at me. Like I said, I was drunk. I don't feel the same way about you. I love you as a best friend, nothing more than that. Matter of fact, I think it's best you stay away from me. We're finna graduate in a couple more weeks anyway. I hate to say this, but you won't be seeing me anymore. Imma marry the woman of my dreams one day. I can't ever see myself with a man."
"You're telling me this as if I was the one that came up to you. I stopped trying to reach out to you; I left you alone, yet here you go all up in my face instead of celebrating your win. I may love you more than I should, but one of these days you're going to regret cutting me out of your life. I did everything for you. Who was there for you when your father passed? Who was there to wipe your tears and tell you everything is going to be okay? I showed up to almost all of your games just to support my best friend. How many times did you wake me up out of my sleep to vent to me about that same girl that supposedly cheated on you, yet you're all in her face like she did nothing? I will always love you, but you're full of crap, and you know it."
"You're done with your monologue. You said a whole bunch of nothing. The fact that you're so mad you can't have me, that you're bringing my pops passing lets me know where we stand. I'll say this as nicely as I can: Stay away from me and stay away from my girl. I got to have the love of a father. Meanwhile, your own parents overwork themselves day in and day out just to avoid dealing with their faggot son. Your own siblings won't even claim you. Your life has been a series of fuck up's. Be mad at yourself for being a disappointment."
And with that, his tall frame left my eyes as he left me to think about the words that left his mouth. I felt numb. I wanted to cry, yet no tears left my eyes. I wanted to scream, yet my mouth stayed still as I looked down at the floor, wishing it could swallow me whole.
Weeks after the encounter, I simply only went to work. Since I was pretty much done with school, I didn't attend my graduation. Despite it being a big accomplishment, it didn't feel that way for me.
I also learned that I was carrying a child. How, I still don't know. I wanted to tell Myles that he would be a father, but fear of rejection stopped me from doing so. I moved on with my life with a goal to care about my child and only my child.
