I really wish I could have believed him when he told me he didn't do it. I can recall his large eyes, bloodshot red and swollen from crying. While I was deeply involved with the woman who deceived us all, he was on the other side of town enduring the wrath of her brothers. Every time I close my eyes, the image of his small body lying on the cold ground invades my thoughts. I failed him; he should be here by my side, yet he left me in this wicked, cold world.
I had known Cory since our sandbox days; whereas I was cold and rude, he was sweet and bubbly. Although we were total opposites, I couldn't help but let the small boy in. I never had a problem with Cory regarding his feelings for the opposite sex; he was my best friend above all. When he confessed his love for me on prom night, instead of accepting his love, I spat out some of the most toxic words in an effort to hurt him.
My on-and-off girlfriend Shelia hated Cory. She would often tell me that my relationship with Cory wasn't normal, but I brushed her off, knowing she was talking nonsense. She was obsessed with me and was willing to do anything to keep me all to herself. Shelia grew up in a rich household. Her father was a dangerous man—behind his expensive suits lay a cold and unforgiving persona; he would do anything for his princess.
When Shelia told me she was pregnant with my child, I was happy, although conflicted. I couldn't wait to have a mini-me running around. In an effort to rid Cory from our lives, she did the unthinkable: she harmed our child and framed Cory for it. I don't know why I believed her, but I'm ashamed to admit I never let him explain his side of things.
Once her wicked father and her overprotective brothers caught wind of her lie, Cory's life was in grave danger. The innocent boy who wouldn't hurt a fly was now dead, and all it took was one deceitful lie. I wish I had let him inside my house the night he begged me to let him in. I was filled with rage, and I let it cloud my judgment. As the night went by, his screams echoed in the air, and that memory will haunt me for as long as I live.
When Shelia found out Cory had died, her usual coldness changed into instant regret. She screamed and cried, saying she didn't think things would take such a devastating turn. Shelia's father was never the same after his daughter's confession; the blood of the innocent boy was on his and his son's hands. It had gotten so bad that the man had succumbed to madness; the screams and the visual image of the innocent boy who was beaten beyond recognition plagued his thoughts.
Cory's parents were never the same; they too had abandoned their son, convinced he was capable of committing such an act. The death of Cory Mitchell will forever be embedded in history, gone too soon due to a girl's jealousy.
