My heels clanked loudly against the tiles that lay flat on the ground as I took in the scent of cooked food; my stomach rumbled in protest. As I followed the server, my baby daddy came into view. Terrell sat at the round table, and right next to his huge figure was a very pregnant Nikki. As her hazel eyes met mine, a mocking smirk appeared on her red lips. Terrell stood up and went in for a hug; instead of returning the gesture, I put my hands against his broad chest, successfully backing him up and offering a handshake instead. It had been months since he revealed he had impregnated my ex-best friend. I avoided his many advances to talk to me, and it took a while for me to so much as utter a word to him.
Terrell wanted Nikki and me to squash whatever beef we had for the sake of our kids. He called me to arrange a dinner for us to discuss things, and I only agreed for the free food. As I looked at the pregnant woman, the disgusting smirk never left her lips. What a vile woman, I thought to myself. Nikki has been breaking up homes since we were teenagers; she found joy in running around with any man who would give the slightest bit of attention. I cut her off once I got tired of her constant negative and toxic behavior; ever since then, she has been trying her hardest to get back at me.
"I called the both of you here to get you on common ground. I know things have been bad between you two, but I need you both to get along for the sake of the kids. I know it won't be easy, but please try to get along," Terrell said, breaking the silence.
"I don't have an issue with him, baby; he's been mad about some things I did years ago. If anything, he should be the one giving me an apology," Nikki said confidently.
When I didn't immediately respond, just like the vile woman she is, Nikki decided to go for the kill.
"I mean, you can't get mad. Your nigga wants something better, and that just so happens to be me. You need to let that hurt go; it's not a good look on you, Kye. I honestly don't feel bad for you. You always walk around thinking you're better than everybody, and that's why I fucked your nigga. He chose me, boo; you need to accept that I'm going to be here for a while," she said, satisfied.
As I sat with my legs crossed, my stare lingered on Nikki. I wasn't mad, not in the slightest; she clearly wanted a reaction out of me.
"I guess you feel like you're on top of the world, huh? You feel like you won a prize stealing somebody else's man. Nikki, I can't make this any clearer to you: I don't want Terrell. What we had is strictly in the past, but I've been letting you slide for far too long. You're a successful black woman; you have it all—the looks, the money—yet it's just not enough for you. Deep down inside, you are a disgusting individual. Your mother would have rather worked herself tirelessly to avoid coming home to you, and your daddy ain't no better. Despite him spoiling you and giving you anything you want, you craved the love that you never had. We've all been through something, but that doesn't give you the right to do the shit you do. Thank you for dinner, Terrell, but I'm not about to sit here and act like we're good cookie-crunch sisters. I hope you both have a good day.
As Kye left the restaurant, Nikki sat there with tears running down her face. She took in the words of her ex-best friend and admitted that his words struck her like a knife. When Kye mentioned her parents, her mind slipped back to the little girl who would have done anything for the love of her parents. Nikki had slept with many men, both single and taken; she longed for the day when a man could love her as she deserves. She yearned for the day when a man would take her home to meet his parents, and she hoped for the day when a man would put a ring on her finger. Yet, they never did those things; they only wanted Nikki for her body and their own pleasure. She had one person who had her back through everything, yet she lost him due to her selfishness. She misses Kye, whether she wants to admit it or not. She hopes that one day she can change her ways—not just for herself, but for the sake of her growing child.
