MAN DOWN

Tears clouded my vision as I sobbed into his strong chest. "Please don't leave out that door. Please don't leave us," I said, my voice barely noticeable behind the broken tremor.

He wasn't listening to me. There were cruel and unforgiving men out there threatening the safety of his family; he was out for blood. I had seen that look in his eyes before—his eyes, which were a light brown color, were now pitch black. He would do anything to keep me and the kids safe, even if that meant putting his life in harm's way.

My pleas and attempts to talk him out of what he was about to do were futile; he made up his mind the minute he found out that his brother was currently in the hospital fighting for his life. My husband's sworn enemies were sending him a message: "You're next."

I knew from the moment the birds sang me out of my peaceful slumber that something was wrong. Something inside me shifted—the nagging feeling that sits in the back of your head, almost like an annoying pest. For the past month, I've been having dreams about death, some seeming almost too real. I come from a family with unique abilities; my specialty, if that's what you want to call it, is that I have visions. When I was much younger, I didn't understand why I would black out at any given moment as my body shut down to see a vision. I didn't like it; in fact, I hated it. It would take so much out of me emotionally, that is.

"Baby, I love you more than anything in this cold-ass world. You saved me when I didn't want to save myself. I owe my life to you and my kids. I'mma come back to you, best believe that," he said into my ear as we were locked in a heartwarming embrace.

As he whispered sweet nothings into my ear, I didn't say much. I just breathed in his scent—that alluring smell that always seemed to ground me.

"I got some of the best who would die for you just outside that door. You're gonna be good, my love. I'mma come back all in one piece. Love you," he spoke for the last time. After his declaration, we shared a kiss, and it seemed like time stopped; it was just me and him.

As he walked out of the safe room, I kept telling myself he would come back, but I knew better.

Time passed by as I sat in the chair, waiting for the moment he would walk into this room to hold me in his strong arms. My body began to shut down, and black spots filled my vision. Bodies lay across the ground; the metallic smell of blood lingered in the air. It was a sad sight to see so many young boys giving their lives to the streets. There he was, all six foot four of him, shooting with inhuman precision—every bullet hitting its target—and he would always tell me he never misses. I could see him breathe out a sigh when he thought that was the last of them.

Darius had taken out the head of the snake. It was finally over; he could go back home to his love and his kids. Shots rang out, loud and piercing, as I watched the love of my life tumble down onto the hard, rock ground. All he could think of was us. As the shooter took his last breath, so did Darius. When I finally came back to reality, I let out a loud wail—a scream so haunting. Tears clouded my vision as I recalled the memory of my husband being gunned down and taking his very last breath.

I should've held on to him just a little bit tighter. Maybe then he wouldn't have left me. Maybe if we had moved, he would still be here. Why me? Why me, Lord? Why did you take him? He didn't do anything but leave the chains of what we call the streets."

It seemed like forever after my breakdown. I felt numb; I felt as if a part of me was gone, leaving me all alone. As I finally looked up, my kids were staring at me, their eyes wide, their little minds trying to figure out what was wrong with me. I didn't say a word. I scooped the trio into my arms and held them as I let out broken, slow sobs. In a way, this was what was left of him—a product of our shared time together. How am I supposed to move on knowing my husband is no longer here?

"Dedari, come here right now!" my big brother's booming voice echoed across the house.
