Bambi's classes passed quickly that day. She wasn't going to let any amount of homework from McGonagall or snide remarks from Snape ruin her mood on her birthday. In a free moment before afternoon Quidditch, she sat down in an empty classroom to write her father a letter.
October 28th
Dad,
School has been so fun so far! So much has happened lately that I don't know where to begin to explain. I'm playing real Quidditch! I made the Gryffindor team as a Chaser. I have two roommates named Angelina and Alicia who are also Chasers for our team. They're really nice, I can see us becoming good friends.
I've also been getting to know a few guys in my house. Fred and George are identical twins who are also on the Quidditch team. They're our Beaters, and they're really good at it. Lee is a friend who hangs around with them.
Don't worry, Dad, I haven't been asked out or anything so please don't ask.
Since today is a weekday, I didn't plan anything for my birthday, but this weekend, the twins and I are going to Hogsmead to look around. I'm using the Galleon you sent me to help buy a new broom while I'm there!
Speaking of, I need to get going. Practice awaits!
Hope India goes well for you. Tell me all about it!
Love,
Bambi
Bambi picked her quill up and looked her letter up and down before adding one last thing below:
Oh, side note- we have this awful teacher, Snape. If you went to school with him, I hope you gave him as hard of a time as he gives us. If I turn up missing halfway through the school year, let Dumbledore know to search his classroom for my mysteriously poisoned body.
Bambi walked the letter up to the owlrey and gave it to a tawny school owl. Gerald looked over at her jealously, but once Bambi told him how long he'd have to fly again, he gave a resigned hoot instead. Bambi scratched the back of his head, and he warmed up slightly but still seemed a bit disgruntled.
Quidditch practice that afternoon was far better than the one they had that morning. The brisk breeze gave everyone a fresh wave of energy after being cooped in classrooms all day. A wave of energy that was a bit too high for Oliver's standards.
Everyone couldn't stop laughing hard over missed goals or dancing around on the brooms with their legs dangling up high in the air. The twins didn't help of course either, instead of focusing, they took turns hitting the Bludger at each other, making contact only a few times. Angelina let it slip that today was Bambi's birthday, and then of course, the team took that as a further sign to even further reason to goof off. Even Harry, who was usually overly focused on practice, Bambi suspected because he was trying to show he was diligent even as a first year, kept zooming around on his new broom, stealing Quaffles out of mid-air.
"Guys!" Oliver groaned for about the millionth time. "I need you to focus!"
The twins had been trying to hit "the birthday girl" with their beater stick when Oliver said this. They both looked at him with their bats raised, mid-strike, allowing Bambi to duck and miss them. They hit each other instead, giving each other matching black eyes.
Oliver facepalmed, "Look! I know it's our first game of the year so the stakes aren't super high, but we will be playing against Slytherin. You need to be prepared for anything that they will throw our way! I'm talking rouge Bludgers, broom shoving, their Beaters will give you a run for your money!"
