In Ominis' story, was he the villain? A desperate boy with good intentions, but fucking terrible luck with carrying out his plans? They'd been so young at the time-all of them. Nora had just discovered she could use and store her ancient magic abilities like Isidora. The goblin rebellion had just been defeated and the next day was supposed to be the memorial for Professor Figg. What else?
Rookwood killed a couple nights before. This had been the point when everything was starting to fall into place. The enemies were getting smaller and he could focus on Anne's cure. He could get his twin sister away from his Uncle who was secretly a prior serial killer, but seemed to be a docile caretaker for now.
And yet... Sebastian had royally fucked that up.
On the bright side, Ominis had made something of himself. Most of the bastards in this place were here because of him. It made him happy to think that he might have been able to move on from that night.
Ominis deserved to be happy.
Marvolo probably never handed him the book either. That idiot probably gave it to his father and when they realized it was a Muggle author, they likely threw it away in disgust.
Pity. It'd taken him hours to rewrite the chapters. Only Ominis would be brilliant enough to realize something was wrong with the index. He'd chosen the Count of Monte Cristo specifically because it was funny. Him and Edmond had a few things in common.
Leaning his head back against the cold stone, Sebastian closed his eyes. The frosty memory of a cold night, butterbeer, and a symphony of laughs played in his mind. It'd been the night Nora told Sebastian she loved him and he'd spilled half the drink on him and the other half on Ominis. Ominis, who'd clapped him on the back, and then told him not to screw this up because he wasn't going to be there as a shoulder to cry on when he fucked it all up. He'd said it with a smile and laughing, but Sebastian had undoubtedly fucked it all up.
The only thing he could ever wish for now was his best friend's happiness and safety. Hopefully there would be someone out there to care for him like Nora had cared for Sebastian. If Gods were real, Sebastian was praying to every single one of them now.
Let him find his happiness.
He deserves it more than anyone I know.
Please.
Chapter 61: The Vendetta
Lucan had left an hour ago to tail Duncan. Both Aurors were wary of him.
"This isn't the first time he's murdered women..." Stella murmured, glancing over at Ominis whose gaze was stuck on the map of London. They were in his study now and the Auror was watching as Jack's location changed every few seconds. Ominis was convinced the madman had suspected Eden's intention of using his blood for a tracking spell and used dark magic to hide his location the best he could. "...Does that mean he was killing people while you were in Hogwarts? Ten years ago?"
Without looking at her, he nodded. "Two years before everything went down... That's about the time that Anne was cursed. She was 13. Solomon took over custody of Sebastian and Anne when they were seven. If he had been murdering people this entire time, then he's had plenty of time to learn how to cover his tracks. When he wants to." Ominis added after a few moments.
