Sol Klein came up behind Luci Moore as she sat at a table in the food court of the Mall at Prince George's and covered her eyes with his hands. " Guess who ," he said with a laugh. " If you win you get a taco supreme from Taco Mama. If I win you do all my pre algebra homework for the rest of our lives. "
Luci laughed merrily. It was actually the first time she had laughed in a long time. " I'm the winner for sure, boy. It's my best friend forever. Where's my taco? "
Sol dropped his hands from her eyes and she turned in her seat to face him with a big smile on her face. Sol wanted to kiss her. But they were just friends, right? Sure he liked her that way but there was no way Luci felt the same way, right? Luci was pretty and smart and sweet and brave. He was just..... just..... Sol. He was nobody special. Luci wouldn't want her first kiss to be from him. Besides since Luci was a transgender girl and actually born a boy like him did his crush on her mean that he was.... really gay like her uncles? He didn't feel gay though. But was he?
He plopped down into the chair next to hers and said with a teenaged pout on his face," Yeah. Besties forever until you start at that bougie private school. Maybe they won't send you since your uncle is talking to the cops? I mean didn't you say that's why he was so scared? Because of what happened to him? Did they tell you who it was?"
Luci shook her head. " No. They won't say who it was but Uncle Spencer did call the cops. We won't get that lucky about Bougie Barrington Academy. They still want me there. Uncle D is even more insistent. He said he looked at the website and it's very LGBTQA friendly. That's ok but I'll miss you. What if you make a new friend and forget me? "
" Gal , stop. I haven't had a friend before you since kindergarten in Alabama and he ate paste and put fingers up his nose. Without you I'll just be invisible old Whale Boy of the sixth grade. Nobody there wants to be my friend. It's you who will replace me at Bougie Academy. "
Luci made a face at him and popped his head lightly with her hand. " Don't be silly. Nobody can ever replace you. "
Sol said glumly," Sure they could. "
Luci whispered," No. They can't. "
Then in the nearly empty food court she leaned forward nervously and softly pressed a fast kiss on Sol's startled lips.
He looked at her and whispered," Oh. "
She looked back and whispered," Yeah. Oh. "
