After that horrible dinner Gertrude Klein could not sleep when she and Sol got home.

Her mind was consumed with thoughts of what she had seen and heard that night. By the feeling of sympathy she had experienced for the two gay married neighbors that night. By the fact that Jim was coming home from the hospital tomorrow. She had put the house up for bail which thank goodness had been reasonable since she was on a very fixed income from the power company. Of course he would have to wear an ankle bracelet until his court hearing. Good , she thought as she sat in her old armchair by the window. Good. It would keep him away from those punks he called friends. If he had once listened to her he would never be in this situation. At least he was only being charged as a juvenile. His lawyer said he might be out of juvenile detention at eighteen if he was found guilty.

She picked up the copy of today's Post and began to read. They were talking about a teacher, Skip Sands, who was being questioned about a sexual assault of a parental guardian at the school. She was amazed and appalled. Something like this made her think deeply about checking into the low income grants that Richard Norland had mentioned earlier. She bet they didn't have teachers like this at Barrington Academy.

She read that the man had an alibi for the accused crime. She read what time it was supposed to have taken place. She read what neighborhood it was supposed to have happened in. She looked up in shock.

She remembered that particular day. She had been working in her front yard garden. Her roses were coming along well and she had been pleased. She had looked over at the Lane - Norland house and thought that maybe Spencer would like flowers. They had once done that. He would bring her baked goods he had baked and she would bring him roses to pretty up the house. Before. They had did that before.

She tried to think hard about that one day. She closed her eyes and suddenly she saw him.

She saw Skip Sands on the front porch of their house next door. She saw Spencer opening the door to him.

She opened her eyes and looked hard at the newspaper article.

She read the fine print words at end of the article," If anyone has any information about this crime please telephone Detective Nita Browne and Detective Wally Williams at the Sex Crime Unit 301 555 2365 ".
