THE BLISTERING HEAT OF AFRICA IN THE DOG
days of summer was a curse sent to the soldiers that waited there. Many of them were sprawled out underneath the shade of the B-17 bombers; others laid out, soaking in the sun while they could. Some were responding to letters their loved ones had sent before the mission.Marilyn found herself lying on the ground, her eyes shut as she desperately tried to get sleep. She had on as little clothing she possibly could have without it being unacceptable.
"You are and always will be the only girl for me." Douglass spoke, putting his cigarette back into his mouth as he added onto the letter. "I hope." He finished, trying to add a little humor into a dark situation.
"Now why would you say that?" Marilyn joked, sitting up and turning her head to look at the man. They laughed as they made eye contact, the past couple of days everyone bonded as they were in forced proximity.
The sound of airplanes flooded the air, the crews standing up to see who it was. Marilyn walked up to where John and Gale stood, trying to see past the dust that was covering the planes. "There's the 12th." Bucky spoke, his hand placed on his hip.
