010; In Sickness and in Health
FOR THE SEVERAL DAYS SINCE THE ARRIVAL OF
John Egan, he has started to make himself feel at home. Wherever Marilyn went, John was surely close behind. Any look another US soldier gave to the woman was immediately shot down by him. However, he had no stand against the Germans.Whatever they wanted was an order he had to follow. Obviously, he hated it more than the camp itself as he was out of control. His whole title was about control and keeping the men in line. While he had control over his friends, in the end he felt seemingly powerless.
Having no contact with the outside world was another struggle the soldier's faced. Thankfully, with the help of Marilyn, they were able to smuggle in an ear piece. This made it possible to listen in on the radio once it was to be finished. It didn't take long, as one of the men was an engineer before the war.
This makeshift instrument helped the group out tremendously.
As the days grew shorter and the nights became colder, the struggle for proper clothes was great. Marilyn often borrowed John's clothes whenever he wasn't with her. It barely brought any warmth but it would make do. Many of the soldiers started to lose weight in significant amounts.
