THE HARSH WINTER CONDITIONS TOOK ITS TOLL
on the prisoners. Many of them already having dropped dead as the sun rose for another day. A proper burial was the last thing the Germans cared for in the camp. The majority of the officers focused on surviving themselves. The Colonel was able to work out an agreement with the Germans, they were not to walk more than twenty kilometers a night. So while the soldiers were gathering their belongings, readying themselves for another night walk, bodies of the deceased were left to rot.

It wasn't long before they were on the move again. A cigarette butt was discarded on the ground by Bucky as he met up with Marilyn, the woman standing beside Alexander and Richard. A nod of the head signaled his acknowledgment of the two men beside her. He took her hand in his, interlacing their fingers as he looked at her. They silently prayed before these walk as they normally do. Though, the two weren't religious, they took extra precautions. Marilyn and John were raised in religious families, however after witnessing the horrific events of a war, their religious views faded.
