It was the day of their return to King's Landing and Alyssa was preparing her bags. Her mother had told her that they had been summoned to court to confirm her brother Luke's claim to Driftmark.
She couldn't remember much of her childhood at the Red Keep but she did remember the day Luke took Aemond's eye. Nothing was the same after that, beforehand the cousins weren't close but after that there was a clear separation between them. Her brothers would no longer jest with Aegon and Alyssa would no longer take classes with Helaena. She did miss Helaena though, being the only kind one amongst them.
Alyssa didn't know what to expect on their return but she knew things had changed. With her father Laenor gone and Daemon as their step father, she knew the dynamic would be different. Viserys her grandfather was barely present at court anymore and she knew that Otto and Alicent held no kindness for Daemon. She really was all alone and felt the isolation. Years away from court and who knew what gossip was spreading about her family. Already before they left she would hear rumours about her and her brother's parentage. It was best to just ignore this gossip her mother would claim and reassure them that they were all Targaryens.
As they exited the carriage Alyssa instantly recognised the differences. The Keep was cold and green, no longer hosting the Targaryens colours nor the dragon tapestries. Alicent's influence was clear and Alyssa hated it. She had barely interacted with Alicent before but she had been raised without religion, much like her mother and brothers. Dragons were their source of power, not the gods.
As her mother and Daemon walked off to see her grandfather, Alyssa gathered up her brothers and they walked together to the throne room which was empty.
"Come on brothers, aren't you excited to see your rooms" she exclaimed trying to lift their spirits. It was no use though, she could read their solemn faces. They weren't happy to be back and neither was she. The rumours were resurfacing and Jace and Luke were the main focus.
"I don't see why we had to return, Luke has always been heir to Driftmark" Jace questioned openly.
"Everyone was staring before, they think we're —" Luke started but Alyssa cut him off.
"What they think doesn't matter, besides I'm sure mother will make things right and so will grandfather."
"How can you be so sure?" Luke questioned,
"Jace is the heir, I have Dragonstone and you will have Driftmark. That is what the King wanted and that is what is going to happen" Alyssa responded confidently.
"Well well well, my old playmates." The siblings turned instantly to see Aegon and Aemond standing behind them.
Alyssa eyes widened, Aegon had changed so much through the years. Now he stood before them with short messy silver hair, meanwhile Aemond was tall with long straight hair. There was no mistaking him with his eye patch. Somehow he looked scary and intimidating even though he was just a year older than her.
"Hello, uncles" Alyssa offered at once, not lowering eye contact. She could feel Luke shaking next to her once he saw Aemond. She put her arm around him and faced her uncles again.
"You've changed, Alyssa" Aemond stated looking her up and down.
"As have both of you." Alyssa answered. She wondered why Aegon was being so quiet and quickly found her answer. He was staring at Jace smirking. You could cut the tension in the room with a knife. Alyssa wanted to leave more than anything.
Finally Aemond said "Mhm" and the two left the room. She felt as if they were kids again, teasing each other but something felt more sinister this time. It didn't feel like a joke anymore to any of them.
As soon as they left Jace turned to his siblings and sighed, "Well they've changed!".
Alyssa giggled lightening the mood, "They sure have, I barely recognised Aegon. He looks like he's been drinking the dornish red for years."
"He probably has been, and to think Alicent's son of all people" Luke laughed.
"Aemond seemed so serious though, he really changed after claiming Vhagar." Jace stated matter of factly.
Alyssa nodded, "You know what they say, the dragon influences the rider just as much as the other way around."
Jace laughed, "Maybe that's why Luke is still small!"
"Hey! Arrax and Vermax are pretty much the same size" Luke rebutted hitting Jace on the arm gently.
"Stop it boys, we have enough enemies here, we don't need to create any more" Alyssa stated leading them out of the throne room. Even though Jace was a year older than her, she often felt like the oldest child. She found herself constantly helping Jace and Luke with their high Valyrian and watching over Joff, Aegon and Viserys.
The siblings parted ways as they went off to their chambers, Alyssa only hoped that she would find some peace there away from everyone. She almost stopped in her track, where was Daeron? Was he still cupbearing in Oldtown? Surely not after all this time. And where was Helaena? Alyssa had heard about her and Aegon's children and found it hilarious that Aegon of all people would have children. She doubted that he'd be a good father, he was never even a good sibling or uncle so what business would he have with children.
"Cousin! How are you?"
Alyssa turned the corner to see Baela, all grown up in a beautiful blue gown.
"Gods, Baela how I have missed you! How have you been at Driftmark?" Alyssa responded grinning ear to ear.
"I have been well, my grandmother Rhaenys has been teaching me and I adore my time there." Baela responded hugging Alyssa.
"I'm so glad to see you, are you here for the Driftmark succession?" Alyssa questioned.
"I am, grandmother is here too. I do hope Rhaena has been behaving!" Baela laughed.
"She's been lovely, it's been great having another girl around amongst all of my brothers." Alyssa smiled.
Baela smiled, "I believe that, sister".
Finally she was reunited with Baela, they had always gotten along well. Now she just had to convince her to stay with them instead of going back to Driftmark.
"Well I'd better find my chamber, but I'll see you tonight at supper" Alyssa announced hugging her once more.
As soon as she arrived at her chamber she dropped onto her bed. She found that her bags had made it to her room before she had and at once she fell asleep.
