betrayal

A week had passed since Alyssa's return to Dragonstone. Despite her not having any of her usual activities to pass time with, she found herself rushing around from council meetings, to the ship dock to see what progress Corlys had made and to nearby towns across the water to rally support and track the Hightowers' movements. Time had passed so quickly and yet she had barely spoken to her mother who seemed to always be occupied with Mysaria, especially since the assassination attempt on her mother.

Despite her and the other's best efforts, they still had no plan. Rhaenyra was not sure in her actions and Daemon had taken off to Harenhall, leaving them leaderless and hopeless. Jace and Alyssa tried to steer the council but constant quarrel would break out.

At what seemed like the hundredth council meeting of the week, Rhaenyra decided they needed to retaliate. Retaliate what exactly? Alyssa wondered, Daemon had just murdered Aegon's son and now Alyssa had no idea what to feel. However in retaliation for sending Arryk to kill her mother, it was decided that they would send Alyssa back to the Red Keep to act as their spy. After her mother described the scheme Alyssa stood there glaring back at her.

"What?!"

Rhaenyra sighed, "I don't want to send you back there but I need someone on the inside. Besides, I know Alicent won't hurt you. Nor will Aegon." She explained. "They will reveal their plans and then we will be able to act, without taking innocent lives for no reason."

Alyssa could not believe what she was hearing. Firstly, why did her mother think that Aegon wouldn't hurt her? Had someone been spying on her at the Keep and told her mother about them? And secondly, why after finally being reunited with her family was she being sent away?

"Is this truly the best plan you could come up with, mother? This is weak and will have no rewards. They will never tell me their plans and nor do I want to know them. I am a dragon rider and want my part in the war to be a top my dragon, not playing with secrets and spying." She spat, her face was reddening and she could feel her heart beating in her chest. She did not care anymore if she was not acting ladylike or if she was making a scene if front of her mother's council. In her opinion it was a truly pathetic idea.

The idea however of her being reunited with Aegon sparked her interest, but what real future did they have together with their family in such a state? And besides, Aegon needed to support Helaena now after their son's murder. Alyssa did not want Helaena to be alone at a time like this, she was innocent afterall.

It was as if her mother had not listened at all when she declared, "You will fly out at sunset then, Alyssa." And turned to leave. Jace and Alyssa locked eye contact and Alyssa stormed out. Again she had to leave her brothers, and what if like last time it was the last time she saw one of them? She could read the desperation in her mother's face but could not understand why it had to be her. She suspected Mysaria's influence may have had something to do with it. And what if when she arrived at the Keep they locked her up? After all it was her supposed father who ordered the murder of Aegon's son. How could he ever forgive her for that?

Alyssa spent the afternoon packing her things once more and saying goodbye to her brothers and cousins. Lastly she bid farewell to her mother begrudgingly and made her way to her dragon.

It seemed the short trip to King's Landing took longer than usual. Perhaps it was all her worrying about how they would receive her or all her worrying about Aegon's state but nonetheless, she arrived after sundown and the guards in front of the Keep went to advise Alicent of her arrival.

After a few silent moments the door open and her eyes befell the familiar setting that she had become so accustomed too. Alicent appeared weary and wore a long green dress which scraped the floor. She looked taken aback when she saw Alyssa but tried to continue her usual act of confidence and self righteousness.

"Alyssa... what brings you back here?" she questioned, looking the princess up and down.

Alyssa gulped and mumbled out the speech she had rehearsed without making eye contact, "I have chosen my side... I bend the knee to Aegon. He is the rightful king, your grace."

Alicent furrowed her brows and looked confused. She appeared to push her confusion aside as she stood aside and said in a low voice, "Aegon will be glad to hear you're back... He has not been well of late..." She trailed off.

It seemed almost odd that Alicent seemed to be caring for her son for once but Alyssa chose to ignore it and walked through the doors. She made her way upstairs planning to visit Aegon first and later Helaena.

As she climbed the stairs she could see servants whispering about her turning their backs to her. She ignored it and almost stopped in her tracks when suddenly a girl came running down the stairs with a grin on her face. Alyssa turned around to see face better and realised she looked familiar. She was the girl with silver hair from the brothel that she had met months ago. But what business would she have here in the Red Keep??

Alyssa continued walking and finally reached Aegon's quarters. She knocked on the door but found it was open already so she let herself in. Aegon's chambers were quite a sight. There were robes everywhere and the floor was littered with wine cups. Aegon, previously seated on his bed shirtless, scrambled up surprised. Evidently he was not expecting her back so soon.

"Alyssa!' He almost screamed getting up and walking towards her.

She kept her distance however and edged back towards the door.

"Aegon, what is this?" She questioned gesturing to the mess around them.

"It is nothing, I simply like wine." He exclaimed raising a glass to her.

Something was not right, "Are you drunk, Aegon?" She questioned wondering why in the seven hells he was shirtless and drinking so early in the evening.

Aegon looked up at her, "Haven't you heard? My son was massacred. And by your father!"

Alyssa didn't know whether to be angry or surprised. How could he so loudly state her true parentage like that? And did he seriously think she approved of the murder of his son?

Alyssa stepped forward so she was right in front of him, "I had no part in that, you know it. And I'm sorry for what Daemon did, obviously I do not approve of his actions."

"It's okay, I know you didn't." It seemed he had finally calmed down. "It is good to see you again, Alyssa."

He hugged her and she closed her eyes and just rested there. She could already tell this so called job of spying was going to tear at her heart.
