Two days had passed and Alyssa felt shellshocked. Aemond had returned the previous night bringing the worst news possible. He had killed her little brother Luke. Just as she felt herself becoming more comfortable amongst them, she was pulled right back to reality. She could not trust any of the Hightowers, not even Aegon. How could she have let her guard down amongst them? Her enemies, the people stealing her mother's birth right.
And to take Luke of all people, the most innocent among them, Alyssa cried out to her empty room. He was just a child and now he was gone. Why couldn't it have been her? After all it was her who had dined among these people, laughed among them and even shared a bed with one of them. Alyssa was hysterical, she felt her guilt rise up through her body painting her red and flustered. Her eyes welled up with tears and her face was swollen. How could Aemond do this? There was no reason, no justification that could explain his cruel act. Her brother was innocent and did not deserve this.
Alyssa had barely slept the previous night, she had to be restrained by the guards when Aemond delivered the news to the dinner table and since then she had spent her night in disbelief. The few moments of sleep that she found every few hours could not transport her far away enough. For every time she would soon wake to see her tear stained pillows and remember her brother's fate. She did not even want to begin to think about Jace, he was Luke's best friend and constant companion and now he had been taken away. But she could not bear the burden of both of their grief. Instead she got up out of bed and walked to her table. She retrieved her ink and began writing to her mother.
She did not even need to think, she knew exactly what she had to say. She began by questioning her mother's plot to marry her off to some nobleman in King's Landing. Then she moved onto the tortures she had endured living in the Keep among the Hightowers. Then she ...
Alyssa scrunched up the letter and stood up at once. How could she complain of trivial things when her brother had just died? An act that essentially called in war? As well as her mother whose throne had just been stolen. Alyssa calmed herself before sitting down again. She restarted her letter and expressed her great sadness for Luke. She wanted her brothers and mother to know that she was with them in their mourning and that she had not become a Hightower despite her time among them.
After writing her letter she sat back in her chair, her cheeks still stained by her tears and her hair disheveled and wet. She closed her eyes and felt the tears coming and allowed them to fall. At once she heard the door to her chambers open. Paying it no mind she continue sitting there, staring at her finished letter until she heard her name being called.
"Alyssa." She heard from what sounded far away.
Alyssa turned in her chair to see Aegon at her door with a concerned look on his face.
She sighed not wanting to have to deal with him at the preset moment.
"I want to be alone, Aegon." She took a deep breath and stood up slowly.
"I'm sorry, Alyssa, I don't know what he has become". Aegon responded shaking his head in confusion. It appeared as though he was desperately grappling with some certainty that he could not bear face.
Alyssa was exhausted, "I don't know what you mean, Aegon, I just want to be left alone" she gasped feeling the air leave her throat. Whatever he wanted to say could wait, he was Aemond's brother after all so who knew what part he had in this scheme.
Aegon began walking forwards towards her, "Aemond, I mean. He is different now. Detached. Ever since that business with his eye, he has never quite been the same."
Alyssa looked at him hopelessly, "It does not matter, I need to get home to my family on Dragonstone at once. I am all alone here."
Aegon grabbed her arms, "You're not alone here, you have me, Alyssa. Aemond is different, I don't even believe that he supports me. Rather he supports his own fickle claim at the throne."
"And what does it matter?" Alyssa questioned looking up at him. How could she ever trust him again? She continued, "Luke is gone..." The tears came rushing down her face at once.
Aegon instinctively wrapped his arms around her and held her tightly. Her face was nuzzled into his chest while he rested his head on hers. "I will get us both out of here, Princess. Even if you don't want me anywhere near you. I swear it."
Alyssa stayed in the embrace but opened her eyes, staring at the floor she nodded solemnly, thinking of all she had already lost.
