Chapter Eight
Jager
I think after a few days of living here, her days started to become routine. I always woke in the evenings before she did and sometimes I woke up wanting her to be in my arms but I never touched her. I didn’t want to scare her off; I hoped that soon she might let me touch her. Philip found her some clothes but for some reason she refused to give up her own shirt and I was starting to get annoyed with that. She wore one of my shirts to bed and washed her own of a night time so it was clean for the next morning. For most of the first week I hardly saw her. She would spend most of her night with Chasseur in the library. But after a week she came into my office to read. I was a little wary of it at first, wondering why she wanted to be in the same room as me. I wanted her to trust me so I let her stay. I tried to show her what I was working on but she never seemed very interested so I gave up with that idea and began to talk to her about anything but us. I began to grow fond of our talks and often waited for her to come in. My work became messy as I rushed through it so I could give her my full attention.
I did most of the talking but I don’t think she minded. I think she liked hearing what I had to say and I liked that she did. She always listened, sometimes she would ask questions and that’s when I knew she was interested. After a day or two she started talking to, but mostly she just listened.
I knew in the time she wasn’t with Chasseur and I that she would roam the house, trying to pick locks on doors and trying to open windows to get out. If I’d known a slave in my house was doing that I’d have them punished, but with her I couldn’t bring myself to even bring it up with her. I felt guilty that she wanted out so badly. Was it really that bad here? Could she miss her life that much, she never talked about it. The action house only took humans with hardly any social ties. People who wouldn’t be missed in society. People who wouldn’t be recognised if they ever went to town on errands. If she wasn’t taken to the action house, what could she possible miss out there?
Some days when we were together her eyes would glaze over as if in deep thought. She looked miserable during these times and I caught myself wondering how to make things better for her. I wanted to open the front door for her and see if she really would leave, but I was scared she would, so I never did.
