Chapter Seventeen
Jager
My meeting went well, if everything went according to plan I’d have a new alliance with the vampire master in the territory next to mine. I went to my room to change my shirt, I had it unbuttoned and tossed on the floor beside my draws before I notice Violet was curled up in bed under the covers. I frowned and went over to her. I climbed on the bed and sat cross-legged beside her. She couldn’t possibly be tiered, it wasn’t anywhere near sunup.
“Violet?” I asked gently, tugging the blankets away from her face. She was clutching the book I’d given her tightly to her chest. “Vee? Sweetheart, what’s wrong?”
She looked up at me, biting her lip and concentrating hard. She shook her head and looked away.
“Violet? Violet.” When she didn’t respond I lay down next to her, closer than she would normal let me get and did something I knew what trigger a response; I gently ran my fingers across her cheek, lingering there. She responded, but not how I thought she would; she turned her face into my hand and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath as if she were inhaling my scent. She put her hand over mine as if to hold it there and let out her breath in a whoosh of air. And then she rolled over putting her back toward me.
I ground my teeth together. “You are so confusing!” I said. “You never let me touch you and then when you do, it’s for all of a few seconds and then you push me away again.”
“Because I can only fool myself for a few seconds. Then I remember who you are and what you are.”
“You think because I’m a master vampire that I don’t care for you? Can’t you see how much I care for you? Do you think I’d give you this much freedom, tell you things about myself that no one else knows, if I didn’t? Why don’t you believe me when I say I’d never hurt you?”
She rolled over to face me. “I don’t know why you told me about you and Chasseur. I don’t know why you give me this much freedom or why you won’t hit me when I disobey you, because I disobey you a lot! I’m human Jager, you’re a vampire master, why would you ever want me? Why should you care about me?”
“Because I love you.”
I’d shocked us both. I hadn’t meant to say that, and she obviously hadn’t expected it. I wanted to take it back, I couldn’t be in love with a human, but I was.
“What?” she whispered, her eyes wide.
“I love you, Violet. I know you don’t feel the same. I know you hate me because I keep you here, but I can’t let you go, I can’t lose you, I won’t. I know you’ll never feel the same way because I took you away from your brother and –”
She stopped my babbling by moving over me and putting her lips on mine. She was hesitant and pulled back, her green eyes wide, her fingers going to her lips, appalled at what she’d done; and then she smiled. I pushed her blond curls back from her face, cupped her face in my hands and kissed her. She kissed back but still hesitant and I knew why.
“You are afraid of me, aren’t you?”
She shook her head in denial.
“It’s okay, I’m not going to do anything you don’t want me to.”
She bit her lip and I slid my arms around her waist, pulling her hard against me, so her hips met mine. She closed her eyes and kissed me, stronger, fiercer, and I knew she wanted me as much as I wanted her. I put my hands on her backside, squeezing it and holding her to me. I lowered my head, nuzzling her neck. She shivered and I traced kisses along her jaw and finally finding her mouth again. I kissed her and she opened for me, letting me lick and feel and probe. She threaded her fingers through my hair, and I moved my hips against hers and she rubbed back. I growled and rolled us quickly so she was on her back and I pinned her there with my body. I put my hands on her hips under her shirt, moving them up and she moaned.
And then there was a loud, impatient knock on the door.
“Not now!” I yelled. Violet snickered, raising herself to her elbows and kissed along my neck.
“Master! You must come!” It was Philip. “Their making a terrible mess! Master!”
Violet had worked her way up to my earlobe and was nibbling on it gently, her hands under my shirt. I moaned at the sensations and Philip knocked again.
“Duty calls,” Vee whispered.
I growled, forcing her back to the bed and kissing her hard once more before getting up and opening the door. “What?” I snapped.
Philip shrunk back. “Mason and Thaddeus are going to kill each other! You have to come!” He took off down the hall and I followed, distantly I could hear Violet following. Philip led me to the entertainment room in the south wing, but I could hear the fight long before I got there.
