Violet

I didn’t like her. Nope, not one bit.

Loretta was a bitch.

Plain and simple.

Chasseur was right. Like always.

“What do you want?” I asked her.

She grinned at me, showing her front teeth through bright red lips but it wasn’t like when a vampire showed their teeth. Vampire’s teeth were scary and intimidating, hers were blunt and unimpressive. She leant forward so her elbows rested on her knees and she looked at Jager. “I want what ever with wants. I want immortality.” She grinned. “His immortality,” she nodded at Jager.

“His what?” I asked, gapping at him, Jager went still at my side. No one answered me. I looked at Chasseur and when I caught her eye she quickly looked down at her lap. I turned to Jager. “What does that mean?” I demanded.

Jager swallowed. I shook his arm and frowned at him but he ignored me and looked over at Loretta, who was grinning like a maniac. “Loretta, is that all?”

“Jager! Are you insane?” Chasseur snapped.

“Nope.” He looked over at his sister. “You think I want to live without her?”

“But Jager, you’ll... die.”

“What? No!” I said. “Jager your not dying so I can have one night.” I still didn’t know what his meant but if it meant he died than no damn way.

“Violet –” he started.

“What does it even mean?” I groaned.

“It means I’ll start aging.”

“You’ll be human?”

He shook his head. “If only it were that easy,” he laughed, but it didn’t meet his eyes. “It means I’ll still be a vampire but I won’t be immortal anymore. I’ll die, just like a human.”

“Of old age,” Chasseur said, softly.

“No! You can’t do that!” I couldn’t imagine Jager growing old, it seemed like such a stupid thing to think about. An aging vampire. Honestly it was ridiculous! Who was this witch kidding? Stupid bitch, I wanted to throw something at her. Something heavy. At her face.

“Can’t you compromise?” Dustin asked. “Like, why doesn’t Jager just give her a certain number of years instead of his immortality?”

Loretta looked at him like he’d lost his mind, Jager seemed to like the idea though.

“I’ll agree to that,” he said.

“No, I want forever,” Loretta snapped.

“Funny how she wants what your rejecting,” Jager muttered to me.

For the first time I felt bad.

Really truly bad that I didn’t want to become a vampire, but the truth was; I was scared.

I was scared to be a vampire.

After being in an auction house and seeing how vampires treated humans, not to mention how crude and violent they all were. Mason and Lidia for example.

I didn’t want to become like them.

I would rather die.

“I’ll give you four hundred years, that’s all,” Jager said. He squeezed my hand and I knew he was just negotiating.
