Chapter Nine

Jager

I was looking for Lidia and Philip when I heard screams and shouts. They weren’t playful or even threatening, but terrified. I bolted towards them to find a few of the slaves at the front of the house coughing on smoke as they were trying to put out fires. The vampires were standing away from the fire but eager to get outside and attack those that had thrown the fire through the front windows. More flame balls came hurling through the windows and I ducked one, yelling orders to the slaves to put them out and for the vampires to find more humans to help, since we couldn’t. I looked through the windows and saw who I expected; The ####’s. Another vampire house hold that wanted our loyalty, when I’d refused to serve under the master of their house they claimed war. The master’s name was Rafael, he was a century older than me and owned and ruled a house hold not much bigger than I did but he wanted to have my loyalty. He didn’t want to overtake Dawn, he didn’t want to interfere but when it come down to it he wanted to be able to have power over me; I’d refused.

More slaves came running with buckets of water and blankets, putting the fires out, and when I could make a break for it, myself and several other vampires went for the door and to defend our household. There were ten of them and only six of us, but our reinforcements were on their way. I slammed into a male vampire about my size, he grunted and hissed as my fist slammed into his jaw. He swung at me and I dodged, thrusting my fist into his stomach, and he stumbled back. I went at him but he surprised me with an upper cut to the jaw that made my fang pierce my lip. He swung at me again and I caught his fist in mine, twisting his arm in a position that would have been almost unbearable and then snapped it at the elbow. He screamed in pain and someone grabbed me from behind, but they were young and their hold weak, so as it was easy to break away and turn on them. It was a female, young and blond, he eyes wide and scared. She looked so much like my new girl that I hesitated and the male grabbed me from behind and the female jumped at me. Fists and feet flew everywhere, and I managed to grab the girls neck and rip out her throat as she tried to bite into my neck. I wasn’t having that. The male smashed something into the back of my head and I fell forward, almost on top of the girl clutching at her bloody neck, gurgling her own blood. I regained my balance and went at the male with a series of jabs and punches and finally knocking him off his feet with a swipe kick at his ankles. I pinned him, baring fangs and sank them into his neck to tear at his throat. His hands found their way around my neck and pushed me away from his neck but could no further because of the pain in his elbow. His growled, low and threatening but I was unimpressed, I’d heard much better, I’d done much better. I grabbed each side of his head and with a sharp snap I broke his neck and ripped off his head. He crumpled to dust beneath me. I jumped to my feet in one swift movement and finished off the girl before running to the aid of my vampires.

I pulled a bulky, gorilla sized vampire off of Lucy, a new member in my house hold. Lucy’s neck and stomach was bleeding, I could tell because she had a shirt on that only just covered the essentials. Together we took down the other vampire. He was strong, much stronger than most young vampires, but that is what he was because he was slow and dim witted, not a fighter, just someone who looked like they might be able to fight. I let Lucy land the killing blow, letting her gain some experience since that’s what she asked for upon arrive. I gave her a brief nod of encouragement and we split ways, both going for different targets.

“There are more!” someone screamed from the front door of the house. “They’re surrounding the house! Master, there trying to get inside.”

I snarled. A vampire could enter another vampire house without permission but it was most unheard of. A taboo among the old ones to do so; they were playing dirty. “Get back inside!” I yelled at the slave that had informed me. I ran around the side of the house and sure enough they were surrounding us. I growled and attacked the first one I came to. She wasn’t young and was an experienced fighter. Another vampire came over and started helping her but that’s when the rest of my vampires came a-running to help. I jumped when an arrow flew past me on fire and looked up to see where it had come from. The girl and Chasseur were on the roof with a bow each, for a moment I watched. I’d seen Chasseur shoot before, she was the best in my house at archery but as I watched the girl take aim and shoot, I realized she was far better than even Chasseur when she shot a flaming arrow threw a vampire’s heart. I grinned and continued attacking our enemy.
