Chapter Twelve
Violet
I turned and ran down the hall, my heart hammered so hard it hurt. I was on the brink of tears and I was so scared that he’d hurt me for pushing him like that and yelling at him. I ran down hall after hall, dashing tears away and when finally I had no clue where I was I leant against a wall and slid down it to sit on the floor, burying my face in my hands.
“Lost again, huh?” I jumped and looked up. Chasseur was standing above me giving me a small smile. “Takes real guts to stand up to the master. Vampires are even too intimidated to do what you just did. You either have guts or you’re just an idiot.”
I choked on a laugh. “Probably the second.”
“Come on,” she said holding her hand out. “I’ll take you to your room.”
“I don’t want to go to his room.”
“It’s yours too, now move!” she demanded.
I grabbed her hand and let her haul me up and leading me back to my room. “I don’t understand,” I said, closing the bedroom door behind us.
“What’s that?”
I jumped up onto the desk, pulling my feet up. “Everyone acts so afraid of him, but he doesn’t act like some big scary around me.”
“Probably because he’s trying not to scare you. He wants you to like him.” She patted the spot next to her on the bed, but I shook my head.
“He can try as hard as he wants, I’ll never like him. He took me away from someone who needed me and I won’t forgive him for that.”
“A boyfriend? He mentioned he thought you had a lover.”
I flinched. “Why because I’m not a virgin? For all he knows I could be the school slut not in a relationship.”
Chasseur shook her head. “You’re no slut. But we know you made love to the same person more than once.”
“Made love?” I laughed, sickened. “Wasn’t quite like that. Anyway how do you know it was more than once.”
“It’s a vampire thing,” she said rolling her eyes. “Has to do with your scent. Would you believe me if I said we can smell how innocent people are?”
I shook my head. “Hell no.”
“Well it isn’t quite like that. Think about your physiological responses to anger, fear, or even arousal: sweaty palms, increased body temperature, they release of certain pheromones. Well, vampires can smell all of that. Certain chemicals in your body tell us –”
“That I’ve had sex with someone more than once?”
“Sorta yeah.”
“Shit that’s weird.”
“So, if you don’t mind me asking. Who was it? Was it a boyfriend?”
“No.”
“Who?”
“I don’t want to talk about this.”
“Come on,” she said, dragging the words out. “You don’t wanna talk boys? I wanna talk boys, let’s talk boys.”
I jumped off the desk. “I don’t want to talk boys Chasseur, okay! Why should you care anyway? As long as your brother has his way there are no other boys for me to talk about!”
Chasseur nodded and shrugged. “Okay then,” she shrugged. “You hungry? I bet you’re hungry. I’ll take you to the kitchen.”
Chasseur pointed to the kitchen door and left me on my own. I think I’d offended her, but she was trying to act like I hadn’t and I almost felt bad until I remembered who and what she was. I walked into the kitchen and almost walked back out, until I realized what Lidia was doing.
