Chapter Eighteen

Violet

I stumbled in the room last, to find the room trashed. Furniture was broken, couches thrown against walls, books scattered across the floor, pens and papers and all sorts from the desk in the corner were spread out across the floor. Emma was under the toppled over desk, her hands over her head screaming, crying and bleeding. There were other vampires and humans in here but I took no notice because it the middle of the room Mason and Thaddeus were beating the crap out of each other. Mason clearly had the upper hand but whatever the fight was over it had Thaddeus worked up and determined to win.

“ENOUGH!” Jager shouted.

Everyone in the room except the two he was yelling at went still. Jager growled something vicious like I’d never heard before and lunged between them, catching them both by the throats and holding them at arm’s length and inch of the floor. “I said, enough!” Both men continued to struggled until I heard small crunching sounds and I realized Jager’s hands were getting tighter around there necks the more they struggled, crushing their windpipes. They stopped struggling, their hands going to Jager’s, trying to pull his hand away from their throats. “Have you two had enough?”

They both gasped faint yes’ and Jager threw the across the room in different directions.

“Well,” said a flat voice. “They don’t call him master for nothing.” I looked beside me and Chasseur stood there shaking her head.

When Mason and Thaddeus had recovered they went to stand by Jager.

“What is all of this about?” he demanded.

“The Bleeder,” Mason hissed.

“Haven’t you already had this argument, I told you how to settle this! Who had her first?”

“I did,” Mason said. “I bit her first. I wanted her, I claimed her.”

“Then that should have settled it,” Jager said, impatient. I was betting he wasn’t a whole lot impressed that we were interrupted for a matter that had already been settled. I know I wasn’t.

“We had. But Thaddeus doesn’t seem to remember the rules.”

“Thaddeus, you know if a vampire wants to claim a Bleeder for themselves they can, and no one else can touch them. If you fed from it second you have no claim.”

“I know, master.”

“Then what’s the problem?” Jager snapped.

“I, master I–” Thaddeus hesitated and looked over at Emma, hiding beneath the desk. “I love her, master.”

Hisses and growls echoed through the room, a male and a female vampire that I didn’t know by name grabbed Emma, pulling her to her feet and dragged her toward the three vampires in the middle. They threw her at their feet and walked away.

“Emma? Is this true?” Jager asked.

“Yes, master,” she whimpered.

“Thaddeus you know the rules about vampires and slaves.”

“I won’t give her to him!” Thaddeus growled.

“Then she has to die,” Mason demanded.

Jager looked torn. He knew his rules, the rules all vampires lived by, but Emma was a favourite of his and Thaddeus was a friend.

“Thaddeus, this is your choice. Mason had first claim, hand her over or she must die.”

“I won’t let him have her.”
