Luna
Saying goodbye, Barry stood in my office at five in the afternoon. It was a shocker when he said he wouldn't be going on his own this time. He was bringing his new secretary with him.
"What?" My forehead furrowed. "Venus is going with you to Malaysia?"
"I don't see any problem with that. She's my secretary," he said confidently, with a shrug of his shoulders.
"You never brought Lydia with you on your past business travels."
"Yeah, and our company is going downhill. I couldn't close a deal because I'm useless without a secretary to handle notetaking, emailing, and contract-making. I gotta wait till I'm back in the office to get them all done."
"If you were planning to do that, you should have thought about hiring a male secretary," I pointed out.
"What?" His gaze met mine with disbelief, as if I was being unreasonable.
"I don't feel at ease when you're traveling with Venus," I admitted. "She's young, pretty..."
Before I could say blond and perfectly his type, he abruptly interrupted me.
"Do you feel insecure about her?" With a creased forehead, he exclaimed, "Wow, Luna. I never expected that from you. You're incredibly smart, confident, rich, and stunning, inside and out. Venus doesn't even come close to how amazing you are."
"I'm not insecure, okay?" I defended myself. "I'm just being real. She's really attractive and you're a guy, so you might feel tempted, you know."
"I'm shocked you don't trust me," he replied, his eyes narrowing in disappointment. "You're my one and only love. I seriously can't wait for our wedding, that every day, I'm literally counting down the days. I'm totally focused on you, my love, believe me. And just to be clear, Venus doesn't appeal to me. I hired her for her skills, as I've told you countless times, not for her appearance. Okay?"
"Okay." I nodded. "That's the exact answer I wanted to hear from you."
With a firm grip, he pulled me close and kissed me hard.
"When I get back, we'll have a whole day to relax and enjoy ourselves. Let's head to the beach and soak up some sun. Sounds good?"
"Sure. I can't wait," I smiled at him.
He glanced at his watch, noting the time, then said. "I really must go, sweetheart. I don't want to be late for my flight." His eyes darted towards the door.
"Yeah, you go." I said. "Have a safe flight."
"Bye." He gave me a smack on my lips and ran to the door.
Barry left, leaving me alone in my office. I sat there, my fingers tracing the smooth surface of my engagement ring.
Despite Barry's reassurance, I couldn't shake the worry that consumed me. I was constantly thinking about the possibility of him being tempted by Venus and betraying my trust in him. I was also afraid that our marriage wouldn't push through, and my dream to have a happily ever after wouldn't happen, leaving me feeling lost and uncertain.
What on earth is going through my mind? This isn't who I am. I'm totally confident and I know my worth. Before I do something that could harm my mental well-being, I need to talk to someone.
I called my best friend, Sage, and could almost picture her smiling face as she picked up the phone. The shrill ring of her phone pierced the air, but my call went unanswered, ending up in voicemail.
I reached out to Dulcie, my other best friend. On the tenth ring, she finally answered her phone.
"Sorry, girl. I'm in the middle of something important right now, so I can't talk. I'll tell you about it later, but here's a little tease - he's quite the eye-candy!" She spoke so rapidly. And just as quickly as she started, she abruptly ended the call.
