Colton
*Flashback eight years ago
Luna went home, and I was alone in our room in the NYU dorm for a week already. I should celebrate that her brother found out that she was sharing a room with a guy, and there was no way he'd allow her to come back.
But a weird thing happened to me. I kept on waiting for her to come back. I missed her terribly — our exchanged of bickering and banter every day, the scent of her cologne that lingered in my nose whenever she walked past me, watching her beautiful face as she slept peacefully like a baby, hearing her even breathing at the middle of the night, and staring at her secretly over my book when she combed her silky dark hair.
I came back to our room one day after playing basketball. It was surprising to see Luna back in our room, packing. She was throwing all her stuff in a duffel bag on her bed.
"You're back."
She glanced at me, then said, "yeah. You should throw a party later, because I'll be home for good. Congrats, you've got the room for yourself."
My forehead furrowed as I looked at her with a confused expression.
"You're leaving... for good?"
She turned to me and frowned. "Isn't that what I just said? I thought you'd only need your personality and brain checked. Now, seems like you need your ears checked, too."
I didn't care what harsh words she threw at me (I deserved it after all the mean things I said to her), I just didn't want her to leave.
She fought for her independence, showing she could manage on her own. Now, she accepted the failure because she'd be back home with her family.
"You stay. I'll transfer to another room."
"Are you kidding me? Being in this room is a big deal for you. There's no way you'd give up the bed of your basketball idol, Tim Roberts. You'd fight nail and tooth for it."
"Yeah, I did. But I realized it doesn't matter anymore. I was being too childish..."
"Wow." She chuckled briefly, then gave me a disgusted look. "I was gone for a week, and I came back, knowing my baby ogre roommate has matured. Too late. I'm leaving."
She zipped her bag, then carried it to the door without looking at me.
"Luna. Wait." I grabbed her bag, not letting it go. "You're not leaving."
"What are you doing?" She pulled the bag harder. "Let go, Colton."
"I mean it. I'll leave and you can stay here." I insisted.
Both of us let go of her bag and it dropped to the floor.
She looked at me with intense hatred and asked. "Why? Give me a valid reason you want me to stay. So, you can have someone to bully? Is that it?"
"No." I shook my head vigorously. "I won't tell you, because you won't believe it, anyway."
"Try me." She moved closer to me, her chin lifted, meeting my eyes. "Maybe it's the only thing you'll say that I'd believe."
I looked away, pressing my lips together tightly, gathering a lot of courage, then met her eyes again.
"I know it's weird, but... I love you." I said and saw the sudden changed of expression on her face. Her face flushed with shocked and anger.
"Oh, God! How I hate you! How could you stoop so low, saying those words to me? You don't even know the meaning of the word love!"
I probably went overboard by using love, but that's what I felt at that moment. All that mattered to me was telling her how I truly felt. But she didn't take it well. It just made her hate me more.
