Colby's POV
*One week before*
Since graduation I have been working at both my family's companies. The law firm and at the account firm. I knew growing up that I would eventually have to take over either one or both of the companies. I just could never decide on which one.
All throughout high school and college I debated about which one I liked more. If you couldn't tell how indecisive I was then me being a double major in finance and pre-law should tell you that. I thought that once I graduated college I would know which one I want to focus on. That was not the case.
The problem for me was that I enjoyed both equally. The other problem is that I didn't enjoy them as much as my parents did. My parents put so much passion into their work. They care for their companies so much. They are heavily involved. Even with their employees they like to know as much as they can. I'm afraid that I don't have that same passion as them. I want to be able to give the company what my parents gave.
In the last six months I put work first. I got to see Noah a few times but we were both so busy. We still made it a priority to have good communication. We would speak every week but not everyday. It was hard. There were so many days that I wanted to just get on a plane and fly to her. The guilt of giving up everything that my parents built was the only thing that stopped me every time.
"Colby...Colby" Leo calls.
"What? Sorry Leo what do you need?" I get up and walk over to his chair. Although he is able to walk on his own he still gets tired fairly quickly so he is currently in a wheelchair for a few more months.
He laughs. "Nothing Colby, I was just asking what you were thinking about. I could tell that you were lost in your thoughts for the past thirty minutes. Oh and by the way you lost" he points to the tv.
"Damn it" I complain. I asked Leo if he could help me get better at video games so that I could play with Nina when I visit. She really enjoys them but when she plays with me it's like playing with a toddler.
"Tell me what you were thinking about" he says. I sigh, taking a seat next to him. He turns to give me his attention.
"I don't know what to pick and the more time that passes the more stressed I get. I don't want to let my parents down. I also don't want to be away from Noah. I want to make the right decision but every time I think about it it seems like no matter what decision I pick I will be letting someone down" I confess.
"Colby, your parents will never be disappointed with you for deciding what makes you happy. They want you to take over because you are their daughter, but that doesn't mean that they will force you into taking over. If it's truly not what you want they will understand"
"They have prepared me to take over my entire life. I don't want them to think that they wasted their time or that I'm not grateful for everything they have done"
"Trust me Colby they won't" he gives a comforting smile. "Your parents care so much for you. Of course they will be concerned for your future no matter what you do, you are their daughter, but they will always support you"
"I don't know how to tell them"
"Just tell them the truth. Be completely honest with how you feel. I can be with you if you need the extra support"
I lean over to hug him, "Thanks Leo"
"Anytime kid" he hugs back.
******
Today is the day that I finally tell my parents how I feel. The truth. I don't think I have been this nervous in so long.
