"Let me help you carry that, Beom." Beomgyu turned to one of his childhood friends, Eunseok, who was smiling at him. He shook his head to decline his offer.
"Oh, no need, but thank you. I can carry this bucket myself..." he replied to him. He was with his friends, heading to the dock to buy fish from the fishermen to sell.
"Ohhh, Seokie! Stop pretending, you just want to impress Beomgyu~ Why don't you formally court him?" Ryujin, who was walking beside him, teased, causing his cheeks to flush. They were flanking him as they walked.
Having known the two for a long time, he was very familiar with their personalities. Beomgyu also knew that Eunseok had liked him for a long time since he confessed his feelings to him, but he had politely turned him down.
Beomgyu only saw him as a brother, and he was grateful that he didn't take it badly.
"Ryu! S-Stop it already. It's better if we head to the fish dock now, or w-we might run out of fish." he urged his friends, wanting to change the subject. He still felt awkward about it.
"It looks like we're really going to be forced off these island. Where are you planning to move, Beom?" Ryujin said sadly, and he felt the same sadness at his friend's words.
Beomgyu's grandmother seemed to have no intention of leaving the island, they hadn't even discussed it at home. He didn't know what his grandmother was thinking. He often saw his grandmother looking sadly at the photos of her late husband. She even visited her husband's grave and his mother's grave almost every day.
A week had passed since they were informed they had to leave the island.
And for a week, he couldn't get the cute handsome male he met at the stream out of his mind. Taehyun. Beomgyu smiled to himself as he remembered the male's playful demeanor.
He also felt sorry for the young male because the last time they met, he remembered that he was forcibly put to sleep by the men who fetched him.
Taehyun didn't want to let go of his hug on him, so those men had to inject him with a sedative. After he told them how he found him by the stream, the men thanked him and left, carrying the sleeping young male.
I wonder what is he doing right now?
"My mother and I are having a hard time to find a place to move. In other places, there's no way to earn a living like here on the island." Beomgyu heard Eunseok say, which brought him back to the present from his deep thoughts.
"The Kang family will give us money to start anew in another place." Ryujin said, carrying the two buckets.
"That's not enough. What if it runs out? Where will we get money then? We live hand-to-mouth... The Kang's should have considered that! They are so heartless!"
Beomgyu immediately tried to calm Eunseok as his voice began to show anger.
He understood his situation. When Eunseok's father died, he became his mother's partner in earning a living and stood as the head of the family for his two younger siblings who were still studying.
Even he and his Grandmother Jung-hee didn't know where and how they could start anew.
They continued walking while he listened to his friends' grievances when the several uniformed men blocked their way. Making his two friends frowned at them.
"Mr. Choi Beomgyu? Mr. Kang wants you to come with us. He wants to speak with you."
Beomgyu's friends' faces showed confusion. He couldn't blame them, he's too was puzzled why that Kang wanted to talk to him.
