Aegon's Pov,
101 AC.
Walking towards the shrine of Balerion I see grandsire here as he keeps himself up with his cane making me quicken my pace. "Why are you out of bed? You should be resting grandsire."
"When you look at this, what do you see?" He asks me and I raise my brow. "Have you been drinking too much milk of the poppy again?" I counter and he can't stop the small chuckle that leaves his lips before he places his free hand on my shoulder and squeezes it firmly.
"Answer me Aegon, what do you see?" He asks once again, and I look towards the skull of the largest dragon that ever lived.... the one that helped my ancestors take the Seven Kingdoms.
"In a way I see us, the blood of the dragon flows through us we can be wild and reckless... and yet if it weren't for our dragons we would have been like everyone else.... like any other house in Westeros.... without them we wouldn't have been able to conquer." I say and he nods his head as he looks towards the skull of Balerion.
"The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion. They're a power man should never have trifled with. One that brought Valyria its doom. If we don't mind our own histories, it will do the same to us. Targaryen must understand this to be King" He says and I let a frown settle on my face as I look at my grandsire.
"Why are you telling me this? I'm not one to be king, I don't think I would even wish it.... it sounds boring and something that would make my head hurt." I say and he releases a small chuckle as he looks back towards me as his violet eyes search mine.
"With your father dead people wish for me to name a new heir, and yet I'm afraid to do it." He says and I nod my head. "You always said the only thing that could tear down the House of the Dragon... is itself."
"Who do you think should lead after me?" He asks me and I think about it as I furrow my brows. "Viserys is your eldest living male heir, but I don't know he is rather one to turn away from conflict.... you can't always do that. Daemon? He's to impulsive and hotheaded.... that's not always good either. And Princes Rhaenys she's your eldest grandchild but she's well a woman, Viserys said that in Valyria women could rule but here in Westeros they won't easily accept that so either way who you'll chose it will anger others." I say with my thinking face as I look at him.
"The Iron Throne is far more dangerous than dragon back Aegon, do you understand that?" He asks me and I nod my head. "I don't have a dragon, and I'll never sit the Iron Throne so I would say I'm pretty save don't you think?" I say even though it makes me sad that I don't have a dragon.... my egg never hatched.
"One day you will have your dragon, I'm sure of it..... and one day you will sit the Iron Throne, you are my heir Aegon." He speaks as he takes my other shoulder now in his hand and I shake my head.
"B-but I don't want to be king." I whisper as I feel tears start to well in my eyes. "Than you are one of the few who do not wish it, and that makes you even more worthy." He says and I shake my head once again before leaning forward and wrapping my arms tightly around him as my tears move down my face.
"I-If I'm king that means you're dead, I-I don't want you to die." I sob out as I feel him wrap his arm around me. "I have to go one day, and the best thing I can do is make sure that the Iron Throne will go to someone worthy of it." He whispers and I shake my head.
"Can't we go together?" I whisper and I hear a breathless chuckle leave his lips. "You'll not join me for a long time Aegon, you'll grow up into a fine man.... and a great king, you'll find a lady who you'll love and she will give children and then once your old like I am now than you'll join me." He softly says as I feel my eyes make a wet patch on his clothes.
