Lily was sitting in the garden with her familiars curled up around her. She sat in a field of purple flowers that had a calming smell. She was reading a book on magic enchantment. Her goal was to learn everything she could about magic and she wanted to find out if she could make money from it somehow. The book she found said anyone that had a blessing could enchant, but that it was very difficult to master. It was rare for people to be able to enchant items as they would have to dedicate their whole lives to learning it as a human's life span was not long enough to master both combat and enchantment magic. It required a high level of concentration and a large mass of mana.
Lily sat in the garden and read for hours. She didn't notice the boy trying to sneak up on her until her familiars heads snapped up to inspect the intruder. She noticed how they remained calm and didn't show any sign of aggression and looked back down on her book.
"What book are you reading now?" She heard her brother Alexander's voice call out.
"It's about enchantments." Was her only reply as she continued to read quietly.
"Why would you waste your time on that?" Alexander rolled his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest. He looked down at the little girl like she was crazy to even bother reading about it. She knew people didn't practice it very often anymore, but didn't think it was such a bad topic to brush up on.
"There are hundreds of ways to use enchantments. You could make weapons stronger and sharper. You could enchant objects with protection spells to keep weaker people safe. You can even enchant objects to allow people who can't use magic the ability to cast simple spells."
"I've never heard of anything advanced when it comes to enchanting. I doubt it could be as incredible as you think."
Lily finally closed her book and looked up at her brother.
"Let me practice on something for you then. I could attempt to upgrade your sword or maybe a broach with a protection spell."
"You're too confident in your skills. I doubt you could actually pull it off. I'll bring you a jewel and you can try to enchant it with whatever you want. I need my sword for practice and I'm sure it's going to take a while for you to figure it out." The boy walked away and waved goodbye from behind his back in a lazy manner.
As promised her brother had a maid bring a small box to her room that night with a purple raw jewel. It sparkled like her brother's eyes and she thought it was beautiful. During her next lesson, she asked her teacher everything she could about magic enchantments.
Elros just laughed and tried telling her what her brother did. He said that it would take too long to learn and that it wasn't worth a human wasting their short lifespan on it. He told her that there was an old elf in his village who was an enchanter but mainly used his abilities to make enchanted arrows and hidden barriers.
When Lily got home she decided that she would have to at least try it to find out if it was possible. She sat on her bed and held the purple jewel in her small hands. Concentrating on the flow of mana in her body she imagined a spell that would spread a thin layer of mana over the body of a person or object to make it almost indestructible. If it works then all someone would have to do is supply the jewel with mana and they would be covered in a magic shield invisible to the naked eye. It should withstand magic and physical blows. Lily concentrated and tried to use enough magic that it could withstand powerful attacks.
When she was done, Lily put the jewel back into the small box and lay down on her bed. The young girl could barely get any sleep as she badly wanted to test it with someone. Unfortunately for her, it was now in the middle of the night and everyone was sleeping. She would have to wait until tomorrow.
When Lily woke the next morning she rushed to her brother's room and knocked quietly. Her excitement showed on her face as she could hardly stand still. When Alex finally opened his door and saw his sister's good mood, his first thought was how adorable she looked trying horribly to be calm about something that made her happy. He wondered for a small minute what she could possibly think about to make her this happy, but regretted even thinking the question after she explained.
Grabbing the boy's hand and practically dragging the poor boy behind her as she explained her reasoning. "I need a test subject for a quick experiment. I don't think you'll get hurt, but we should definitely do this away from the house."
He tried pulling his hand back at first, but she had an iron grip on his hand. He started to enjoy getting to hold hands with his new little sister until he heard the words 'I don't think you'll get hurt'. He had to admit that he was pretty sure Lily would win if it was a magic contest. He had seen her magic up close and watched her using magic to play with her familiars. Whatever she had in mind would be dangerous and her newest test subject was him.
