Arthur let Lily ride on Alaskas back to the estate. She was flying through the air with Drago close behind. She kept replaying what had happened with the king.
The king had no intention of adopting Lily. No, he wanted to engage her with his son. If a noble girl is engaged to the crowned prince then she is automatically a princess. I would be considered a part of the royal family even if we weren't married yet. The part that made her feel uncomfortable was that it was not offered as a choice. The king pretty much declared her engagement without her opinion and there was nothing she could do about it.
She wanted to travel the world and see everything there was to see. She didn't want to be tide down as some snobby prince's fiance. Arthur assured her it was the best way to protect her from bad people, but she felt sad that her opinion as a young girl didn't matter for who she was to marry. She decided that she would agree for now to the engagement, but that she would leave to see the world before any wedding happened. Once she was an adult and could travel alone, she would do what she wanted to do.
On the bright side, the king offered to let her take magic lessons at the castle. She could take her familiars to the castle for lessons and she would be taught by the royal mage. She was not told however that the prince was already a student of the royal mage and that their lessons would be together.
Lily stayed in the air for a few more hours just flying around the estate. When she noticed the servants getting everything ready for dinner she flew down and bid goodbye to her companions.
Meanwhile at the castle.
The king sat in his office as he read a scroll over and over again. It was a scroll that had been passed down from every generation of kings. It was written by the first king. A warning from the goddess they worshipped. To think the warning would apply to his generation. How many kings have held onto this and thought it only a fairytale, just for it to come to pass? A knock on the door had broken him out of his thoughts.
"Come in" He called out.
The office door opened to see a younger version of himself standing in the door. His son Christopher.
"Father you asked to see me."
Xerxes nodded his head as he told his son. "Have a seat. There's much we need to discuss."
The young boy quickly shut the door and took a seat.
"This is a scroll passed down to every new king after his coronation. It is a prophecy from the goddess herself, written by the first king."
"Father, I have yet to be crowned king yet. Why bring this up now?"
"Yes, you are no king yet. You are still my only son and you will inherit my crown one day. The truth about this scroll is that it is more of a warning than a prophecy, and it seems it is time for it to come to play."
"I don't understand."
The young prince looked at his father confused.
"The scroll tells the story of the war of the four nations. It tells of a sinister demon called the dark lord. The first kings were able to take him down, but they were unable to kill him. This warning from the goddess tells us that he will come back even stronger one day. She promised the kings one more gift for when that day came, but wouldn't say what it was. She only told them that it would be more powerful than their own."
The king let the information sink into the prince's head before he spoke again.
"I believe I have met the last gift from the goddess today."
Christopher's eyes grew wide.
"You've seen the gift from the goddess with your own eyes father?"
"Not only did I see her, but I spoke with her and tested her blessing. She was gifted with infinite magic. She will never be able to use all the magic she possesses. She is the only one that could be the last gift from our dear goddess."
"The last gift is a girl with infinite magic?"
"She's quite cute as well. I've also decided to make her your fiance."
At the last bit of knowledge, the crown prince frowned.
"I thought I was allowed to choose my partner? Why would you decide my engagement before I've met her?"
"She is the only one who will be able to protect us when the time comes. She needs to be kept close and safe. The best way to do that is to make her a princess of this kingdom. She's very well-mannered and cute, so I don't think you're going to disagree with me once you've met her. Did I also mention that she has two contracted familiars, a white tiger, and a black dragon?"
The king laughed when he noticed his son was still scowling at him.
"Don't worry, you'll have many chances thanks to me to get to know her. She will be joining your magic lessons."
"You think a little girl is going to be smart enough to take lessons with me? I've been practicing since I was a small child."
"Don't worry son, from what I hear she has perfect control over her magic, and you're still a small child."
With that rude remark, Christopher left his father's office. He was mad that his father took away his right to choose his wife. He was promised when he was young that he would not be forced into an arranged marriage, but now look at him. He would have to wait until his magic lessons to meet his betrothed. It didn't matter what his father said to him. It would be only a political marriage. He would never love her.
