A new home

We had traveled a few more days and I was starving. These idiots didn't know how to properly take care of a baby and it was painfully obvious. I was currently lying under a tree as my guard went to relieve himself and the other one went to hunt for food. Seriously what idiot goes to the trouble of kidnapping a baby just to leave it alone in the forest?

I heard a branch snap and I rolled over on my stomach to see where the sound came from. It took me a few minutes to roll over since I was still a small weak baby. When I finally looked up I would have gasped if I could talk.

A small white cub stood only a foot away from me

A small white cub stood only a foot away from me. It stared at me with curiosity. Its fur looked so fluffy and its eyes looked so kind. I never had a pet in my past life but this kitten was adorable. I used my tiny arms and legs to crawl toward the kitten and placed my tiny hand on its fur. This may have been a baby but this cub was quite large. Its body was twice the size of mine. He walked closer to me and rubbed his head on me. He was purring and the sound made me smile. It felt like he was trying to comfort me.

The kitten turned his head and walked towards the blanket I had been lying on. He looked back at me and nudged his head towards the blanket. I forced my tiny body towards him and back onto my blanket. Once I sat down, the kitten started grabbing the corners of the blanket with its mouth. Was this baby kitten trying to take me away from here? There was a voice in the back of my head telling me to trust this animal. So I helped grab the corners of the blanket and brought them closer to his mouth.

The kitten held its head as high as he could until I was no longer touching the ground. He quietly left the campground and took me away from the men who had taken me from my birthplace. I knew there was no way I would make it back home. We had traveled for weeks and that was only the part I remembered. There was a chance we traveled longer but I had only gained my memories after some distance. I had no way of knowing the direction to go and how long to travel. Let alone if I would be able to make it back alone as a baby.

The white cub had placed me down on a hard surface after a few hours of traveling. After he placed me down, the blanket was no longer blocking most of my view and I could see a house in front of me. The cub was leaving me to some adult humans to care for me. He started to purr again as he rubbed his head into my hands. It caused me to giggle and I soon heard footsteps on the other side of the door. The cub ran and hid behind a tree as the door opened and an old woman greeted me. She gasped as she looked around to see who had left a child on her doorstep. After giving up on looking for someone responsible she knelt and picked me up. She held me close to her chest and started whispering sweet words in my ear.

After that, she took me into her home and gave me a bath and new clothes. She even gave me some milk, which I was desperate for. The clothes I had on were dirty and torn. She ended up throwing them in the fire since they were in such rough shape and surprisingly had baby clothes already and dressed me. She was currently holding me by a fire trying to warm me up. She reminded me of a sweet grandmother. She had long grey hair that she kept braided to the side. She had wrinkles all over her face and hands but she had a warm smile. She held me close and rocked me to sleep. It was the first time I had slept peacefully since regaining my memories.

The next day I found out that I was actually in an orphanage. The old lady had kept me on her back with a blanket wrapped around both of our bodies. There were only a few kids in the orphanage but they were all excited to see me and kept asking the old woman where I had come from. She only smiled warmly and replied that I was a blessing from the goddess. She ended up naming me Liliana and caring for me. She let me sleep in her bed with her and kept me close at all times. She was the first person who had treated me so kindly and always looked me in the eyes and called me pretty. I loved her like my grandmother.

Time went by peacefully in the orphanage. The kids were kind and tried to help the old woman as much as they could. She had a small farm that the children helped her take care of. She used the food to feed the children and sold the leftovers to make money. I was able to start talking around six months old, although my vocal cords were still growing so it was hard to pronounce bigger words. Once I was nine months old I could start to walk around on my own. Grandma Gina was surprised with my use of speech and how early I had started walking. She constantly praised me for being a blessed child.

Living in this orphanage has taught me many things. There is no advanced technology in this world. The scary bedtime stories told to children about demons are real and not myths. Also this world has real magic. I was in a world I had always dreamed about. A world of fantasy.
