Arthur walked and squatted in front of Lily as she sat on a small swing tied to a tree branch.
"Alexander told me about your experiments. I wanted to ask you about them."
"Oh did he show you already? I was hoping to have a better prototype before I made it more public. Since you already know about it, you could help me too!"
"How could I help? I'm afraid I don't know much about enchantments since I'm a battle mage."
Lily couldn't help but giggle as she watched the duke suddenly become nervous.
"No, you're perfect! You could carry one around just like Alex. Then you can let me know if it's lacking anything or if you feel it's taking too much mana. It's still not perfect but if I can get it right then our kingdoms army could also use them."
"The army? You were making these to give to the army?"
"Of course not! If they want them when they are finished then they are going to have to buy them. I wanted a way to make my own income. I also thought about how dangerous this would be if criminals get ahold of them so I'm planning to make them customary to each person. That way they will only accept a certain person's magic."
"This kingdom is your home and you took care of me. Shouldn't I help take care of your home in return?"
The duke was shocked. He couldn't find the right words to say as he thought about what she had said. How much she must have thought about this. He started thinking it was fate that he had met her. The only reason he had to go to her village was the fact that the monster that was reported was incredibly strong and he didn't want to send inexperienced people after it. To think that the monster he was sent to hunt would belong to such an incredible child. He placed his hand on her head as he smiled at the young girl.
"I'm pretty sure a father is supposed to look after his daughter, not the other way around." He ruffled her hair and he paused. "Thank you for accepting me as your father. I don't think I could ask for a better daughter than you. I'm very proud of you."
She couldn't help the tears that started to fall from her eyes. No one had told her they were proud of her. Her grandmother, although sweet and had taken her, had no choice but to take care of her. She was left at her doorstep so, of course, she would take her in, but the duke had chosen to take her in and even called her his daughter. He said he was proud of her. She was so overwhelmed by her joy in that moment that she couldn't help but let the tears fall freely.
"If you have some time... do you think you could push me, Dad?" She was scared to ask, but she couldn't help but want to spend a little more time with him. He made her feel so safe and loved. It was a feeling she didn't think she would be able to live without now that she experienced it.
Arthur's face was worried at first but he couldn't help but agree as she called him dad. For some reason, he felt like it was hard for her to accept herself as a real family member, but he was glad she was trying.
"Of course my lady."
As the duke pushed her on the swing Lily could not help but laugh freely as she experienced the joy of being a daughter for the first time in both of her lives.
The next day the duke had brought her a few objects that he asked her to enchant for him to use. He told her she could apply whatever enchantments she wanted and he would test their safety for her. At first, she was nervous about making a duke her test subject, but she quickly got over her anxiety as she looked through the small chest he had given to her.
She had to enchant a long sword as well as two daggers. There was also a leather bag, a black ring, and a compass. He had given her a rare opportunity to try and enchant different objects and he was giving her free rein on what kind of enchantments.Lily started with the ring. She put the same enchantment as the stone she gave Alexander. Then she picked up the compass and decided to put her detection magic on it. Whoever puts their magic into it would be able to find whoever they are looking for. It reminded her of a tracking device from her world.
The next object she decided to try was the bag. She had a little trouble trying to decide what kind of enchantment she should use on it. It would make sense to make the bag only open for the owner, but that didn't feel like enough. There was no point in making it lighter since it wasn't big enough to hold much anyway... could she make it hold more?
In all the fantasy books she had read about magical bags that connected to a portal in another dimension. Making it possible to hold more than what it normally could. She wasn't entirely positive it could work, but experiments were to try new things so she could at least try. It took her a week to figure out how to enchant the bag to hold more than before and to make it only open for its owner.
As soon as she finished with the bag she decided to enchant the sword and daggers. The best choice for the long sword would be to make it more durable and sharp. The daggers on the other hand were more for sneak attacks and taking someone down quietly. Maybe she could make the small one have a paralyzing effect and the other she could hide the owner's presence. Both would be preferable for sneak attacks.
