The sun had just started to dip below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the pitch. Training had wrapped up an hour ago, but you and Alanna Kennedy had stayed behind, taking advantage of the quiet to work on some extra drills. Or rather, you were working on some drills while Alanna watched with an amused smile, occasionally offering pointers.

You couldn't help but be mesmerised by her presence. Alanna Kennedy, towering at 5'8, with her confident aura and easygoing charm, had a way of making you feel both flustered and secure. Your own height didn't quite match hers, and it was a frequent source of playful banter between the two of you.

"Alright, last one," you panted, standing at the edge of the penalty box. You lined up your shot and struck the ball cleanly into the bottom corner of the net. As you turned around, Alanna was there, clapping and grinning from ear to ear.

"Perfect shot, as always," she said, her voice filled with genuine admiration. She walked over, her long strides closing the distance between you in seconds.

"Thanks, but I think I'll leave the defending to you," you replied with a laugh, wiping the sweat from your forehead.

Alanna chuckled, shaking her head. "You'd make a great defender if you wanted to, but I'll take the compliment."

There was a moment of silence, the kind that often fell between the two of you. Comfortable, yet charged with something unspoken. The dying sunlight framed her face beautifully, highlighting the mischievous twinkle in her eyes.

"Hey, come here," she said suddenly, her tone softer, more intimate. She reached out and took your hand, her fingers warm and reassuring against your skin.

You followed her lead, your heart beginning to race. Alanna stopped a few feet away from the goalpost and turned to face you, a thoughtful expression crossing her features.

"Do you know what I love most about you?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

You shook your head, feeling a blush creep up your cheeks.

"I love that you never back down from a challenge, no matter how tough it is," she said, her gaze locking onto yours. "And I love that you're always so determined to improve. It's inspiring."

Her words made your heart swell. You opened your mouth to respond, but she was already moving closer, her height becoming more apparent. She bent down slightly, her face now inches from yours. Instinctively, you rose up on your tiptoes, your hands finding their way to her shoulders for balance.

The height difference had always been a point of teasing, but in this moment, it felt perfect. Alanna's eyes flicked down to your lips, and you felt a shiver of anticipation run through you.

"Can I kiss you?" she asked softly, her breath warm against your skin.

"Yes," you whispered, your voice barely audible.

She closed the gap, her lips meeting yours in a kiss that was both tender and passionate. You could feel her hand at the small of your back, pulling you closer, while your own hands slid up to cup her face. The world seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of you in this perfect, golden moment.

When you finally pulled back, you were both breathless, foreheads resting against each other.

"That was..." you began, struggling to find the right words.

"Amazing," Alanna finished for you, a radiant smile spreading across her face. "I've wanted to do that for a long time."

"Me too," you admitted, your cheeks still flushed.

She kissed your forehead, then straightened up, looking down at you with a fond expression. "I guess the height difference isn't such a bad thing after all, huh?"

You laughed, feeling lighter than you had in weeks. "Not at all."

Hand in hand, you both started walking back towards the locker rooms, the glow of the setting sun painting everything in a soft, rosy hue. It was a kiss to remember, the start of something beautiful and new.
