The sound of your phone buzzing snapped you out of your late afternoon daze. You glanced at the screen, squinting at the unfamiliar number. It wasn't often you received calls from strangers, so this piqued your curiosity.
"Hello?" you answered, trying to mask your hesitation.
"Uh, hi. Is this Y/N?" a distinctly Australian accent replied. The voice was warm yet uncertain, as if the caller wasn't entirely sure they had the right person.
"Yes, it is. Who's this?"
"It's Sam. Sam Kerr." The name immediately rang a bell. Sam Kerr, the star football player, was known worldwide. But why was she calling you?
"Oh, Sam! To what do I owe the pleasure?" you asked, more intrigued than ever.
There was a pause before Sam continued, sounding slightly uncomfortable. "Well, this is a bit awkward, but... I got a call from my PR team today. Apparently, the tabloids are saying we're in some kind of feud?"
You blinked, completely taken aback. "Wait, what? A feud? With me?"
"Yeah, something about a heated exchange on Twitter or something," Sam explained, sounding as bewildered as you felt. "But the thing is, I've never even met you, let alone had an argument with you."
You sat down, trying to process the information. You had seen crazy things in the news, but this was a new level of bizarre. "I don't even have a Twitter account," you replied, laughing in disbelief. "This has to be some kind of mistake."
"That's what I thought too," Sam chuckled. "I wanted to call and clear the air, just in case this was real. But it seems like the tabloids are just being their usual dramatic selves."
"Yeah, it sounds like it," you agreed. "But why would they make up something like this?"
Sam sighed. "You know how it is. They love to create drama out of nothing. Maybe they saw us both at the same event and decided to concoct a story. I just wanted to make sure there were no hard feelings."
You smiled, appreciating her straightforwardness. "No hard feelings at all. I think it's pretty funny, actually. But maybe we should use this to our advantage."
Sam's voice perked up with curiosity. "Oh? What do you have in mind?"
"Well, since the tabloids think we're in a feud, why don't we have some fun with it? We could post something on social media, playing along but in a light-hearted way. It might even be good for a laugh."
There was a moment of silence before Sam burst out laughing. "That's brilliant! Let's do it. We can post something like, 'In the spirit of our imaginary feud, I'm challenging Y/N to a friendly football match.'"
"Perfect," you laughed. "And I can reply with something like, 'Bring it on, Kerr. I've been practising my free kicks!'"
As you both discussed the details, the initial awkwardness melted away, replaced by a sense of camaraderie. The absurdity of the situation had brought you together in the most unexpected way, turning a potential PR nightmare into a fun opportunity.
After wrapping up the call, you couldn't help but chuckle at the day's events. It wasn't every day you got to chat with a sports icon, let alone about a fictitious feud. As you composed your playful social media post, you realised that sometimes, even the strangest situations could lead to something surprisingly good.
And maybe, just maybe, this odd start could be the beginning of a new friendship.
