Steph Catley wasn't just an exceptional defender on the field; she was equally captivating off it. Her presence commanded attention, her smile lighting up any room she entered. You admired her from afar, often finding yourself drawn to her gentle demeanour and unwavering dedication to her craft.
Today, however, circumstances were different. A charity event had brought you both together. As an advocate for accessibility, you were providing sign language interpretation for the event. Steph, naturally approachable, struck up a conversation upon noticing your skilled signing.
"Hey," she began with a warm smile, "I'm Steph. I noticed you signing over there. That's really cool."
You returned her smile, grateful for the chance to interact. "Hi, Steph. I'm Y/N. It's nice to meet you."
Throughout the evening, you found yourself in her company more often than not. As conversations flowed, you discovered shared interests beyond the football field. Steph was genuinely interested in your work and your passion for inclusivity.
Later, while seated together during a lull in the event, she turned to you with a curious expression. "I've always wondered," she started hesitantly, "how do you say someone's name in sign language?"
You grinned, delighted by her interest. "It's like this." With graceful movements, you signed out her name, S-T-E-P-H.
Her eyes widened in fascination as she watched your hands move. "That's incredible," she breathed, clearly amazed by the fluidity and expressiveness of sign language.
Encouraged by her curiosity, you began teaching her basic signs—simple greetings and expressions. She was a quick learner, her determination evident in every attempt. The more you signed, the more you felt a connection deepen between you.
As the event drew to a close, Steph leaned in closer, her voice low. "Thank you for sharing this with me," she signed, her hands conveying sincerity and gratitude.
"You're welcome," you replied in kind, touched by her gesture. "It's important to me."
Before parting ways, she hesitated for a moment before signing, "Can I see you again?"
Your heart skipped a beat at the question, a smile spreading across your face. "I'd like that," you signed back, hoping she understood the depth of your words.
Steph nodded, a soft smile playing on her lips. "Tomorrow?"
You nodded eagerly in agreement, already looking forward to continuing this silent conversation with her.
As you walked away from the event, the memory of her smile lingered in your mind, along with the promise of a future filled with shared moments, expressed not just in words, but in the silent whispers of sign language.
