     Black or White: Michael Jackson

"Good to go, ma'am." The officer finishes scanning me and my bag.

"Thank you." I take my bag and sling it over my shoulders.

I then grab my iPod and place my earbuds in my ears. I stick the bottom of the wire into my iPod and press shuffle on my songs. Chicago by Michael Jackson comes on and I shove my iPod into my jean pocket. I clutch the straps of my backpack and head to my locker. I put in the combination and grab my books for history and math class.

I then turn as a hand is placed on my shoulder. "Hey." I take out one earbud.

"No, hey. Did you get anything?" Rachel beams.

"Rachel, we mailed everything almost two weeks ago."

"Exactly. Letters should be coming in right now, no matter if it was two weeks ago or-"

"You didn't get your NYADA letter yet, did you?"

She sighs. "No."

"You will. So will Kurt, and Finn, and Brandon will get his from Harvard Law. It's all gonna be okay." I nod.

"But you're the smartest person in this school. Even more than Quinn. You have to get letters in already. I'll go to each college board and demand it myself."

I chuckle. "That's nice to hear, but if you do that, then I'll really have no chance. And besides, it's not even February yet, there's still a lot of time left for letters to come in." I close my locker.

"Did you tell them about...about what happened?" She walks with me.

"Of course. If I wanna pursue a career in the Criminal Justice field, I have to let them know. And all the other officers and detectives who backed me up, twice."

"Well, we know and they know you didn't do anything wrong. Neither did your mom." She stops me. "And, you know, after it all happened that day, I just kept picturing every horrible thing possible and I couldn't save you. I really thought he was gonna-"

"Rachel, hey." I grab her shoulders. "You did save me. All of you. What you did that night, you saved me. You guys all huddled up and charged, and beat him down until he couldn't get up. Not just for me, for my mom too. So, Rachel, you saved me." I nod.

"I'll always save you, sis." Rachel hugs me.

"Likewise." I hug her back.

"I'm so happy you're chasing your dreams, and doing what you really wanna do, but I can't picture you in Quantico for FBI training. All those miles away." She sighs.

"That's what planes are for." I pull away. "We visit each other any time we want. It's only an hour and twenty minute flight. That's all it is."

"God, I'm sorry. I'm just—I'm so happy for you, Violet." She happily cries. "You've—You've been through so much and you've put all of us before yourself over and over again, and I'm just so happy you're getting everything you want and deserve."
