Dream POV

My heart plummets like a stone on water at the sound of her panicked voice.

"Y/N?" My voice rises with each syllable, spiraling into a high-pitched cry of alarm. "What's wrong?"

Something is very wrong. So wrong.

I've never heard her this scared before.

"I think someone's trying to break into my house!"

I hear her go silent as I hold my breath. In the background, I can make out banging which is steadily growing louder.

"POLICE OPEN UP!"

I suck in a sharp breath as the realization dawns on me.

"Y/N," I say quietly. When she doesn't respond, I repeat her name, louder and more urgently. "Y/N."

"Yes?" she whispers.

"You need to answer the door, or they'll break it down. Unless you did something really bad I'm sure someone swatted you. They called the police at your address for a false threat. Just open the door and let them search or whatever. If you have nothing to hide, they won't find anything. Answer all their questions and explain the situation."

"I—," she pauses and lets out a soft breath. "Can you stay on the phone with me?"

"Yes," I reply after a moment of hesitation. "But if they want to talk to you alone for whatever reason I'll have to hang up."

"Okay."

The banging becomes louder and louder as Y/N walks toward the door. I hear the click of the lock and the cream of the door hinges.

I go silent, straining to hear what they're saying. I think Y/N put her phone down or something because I heard loud footsteps, faint voices, and radio chatter.

"Y/N?" I ask hesitantly, after a few beats of silence. The footsteps grow louder and there's a scuffling sound, retrieving the phone from wherever.

"Hello?" I deep male voice comes through the line. "Who is this?"

"Hi," I manage to choke out, sounding like a small child.

"That's my boyfriend," I hear Y/N explain from farther away. Despite the dangerous situation, a warm feeling of pride spreads through me at her words.

Boyfriend.

Hearing those words come from her, speaking to strangers who have no idea who we are feels like. Like I'm something she's proud of.

"Yeah," I agree. "Look whatever you guys are here for isn't real. I'm a YouTuber and some of my haters decided to swat my girlfriend over here."

There's silence again and I hear faint talking in the background. Finally, the guy speaks again.

"We still have to check the premises for illegal drugs anyway."

"That's fine," Y/N says. "Just don't scare the Pepper."

"She's probably already hiding somewhere already," I chuckle, trying to ease the mood.

"You can call back later," the officer holding the phone says.

"Y/N?" I ask. "Are you good if I hang up?"

"Yeah," she sounds more relaxed and I smile a bit.

"Alright, call me back when everything's okay."
