I took a final deep breath as George's fingers intertwined with me. We really wanted this and today could change the rest of our lives as just the two of us. Together we entered the highest rated adoption facility in Monaco for children without homes.

George and I had been dating for five years and had been discussing having kids for the past two. We tried really hard to get pregnant but it just wasn't in the cards for us. I underwent every expensive procedure, every recommended medication and IVF twice, with no luck. It hurt knowing no matter how much we wanted a baby of our own, it just wasn't meant for us. We learned later that it was a mixture of both of us adding to the issue of conceiving, which lifted a weight off of my shoulders. I had lost sleep for weeks thinking it was my body that couldn't give us what we wanted.

Our fertility doctor suggested surrogacy and it definitely was on our minds but we wanted to explore all our options first. We thought we would adopt first and consider surrogacy for our second time around.

We both approached the front desk, checking in with the receptionist. After a brief wait, we were greeted by a social worker who we had been conversing with via email to arrange all the necessary paperwork.

"George, Catarina! It's such a pleasure to finally meet you in person. I was pleased to see your adoption application get approved. Now there's just a few more questions we have to go over before we let you meet some of the lovely little ones."

"Thank you so much! We're both really excited to start our family" I responded join behalf of both of us.

She proceeded to ask some generic questions about where the primary residence of our family would be, considering she knows George travels a lot for work. In our application we specified we were hoping for a little boy or girl between the ages of newborn and 5. We felt it made the most sense for our preferences. Finally she asked about what language we primarily speak at home. We both spoke English, but of course being a lifelong resident of Monaco I also spoke French.

"It's not 100% necessary, but it's ideal for us to have our child speak English. I am Monégasque but George is British and is still attempting to learn French."

"Oui oui, but in all truthfulness she's right. I feel like it would be more comfortable for all of us in our home to be able to communicate properly" George added in.

The social worker clicked a few more boxes on her screen and turned back to us. "So we have six children that would make a lovely addition to your growing family. Just give us a few minutes and we will arrange for you to meet them. Our procedure here is that they get play time in the common area and you can interact with whoever you'd like."

While she stepped away, I turned to George with a hopeful sparkle in my eyes. "Baby, do you think we're going to meet the one? Oh my god I'm so excited!"

"Me too darling. Imagine a little boy or girl running around causing havoc in our home. Lazy Sundays just the three of us. God I can't wait. I hope everything goes smoothly."

"Me too."

"Okay you two, the common area is ready for you both. If you need anything, feel free to ask one of the aides!"

With that, George and I locked our hands together again and walked towards the common area. He was admiring all the children having fun and playing. There was six children in the common area with us, four boys and two girls. Most of the boys seemed to be playing together while the girls stuck together themselves. I always knew George wanted to be a girl dad and he'd make the perfect one.
