✿✿Preface
It was many years ago when Max Verstappen, a wide eyed 10 year old with a questionable bowl cut, first met Andrea St. Levant. Andrea's dark hair was tied in two neat pigtails, but even at that age, she was fierce. She was unafraid, defiant even, when an older boy twice her size decided she would be his target. Max had watched from a distance at first, unsure if he should step in. He wasn't used to being the bold one, Andrea seemed so sure of herself, a natural confidence that made her stand out, even at her age. But when the boy yanked her hair and she winced, something in him snapped. Without a second thought, Max ran up and shoved the boy, surprising everyone, including himself. The bully ran off and Andrea, wiping away a tear from her cheek, grinned at him. From that moment on, they were inseparable.
Over the years, they became each other's steady presence. Andrea was the calm to Max's storm, the laughter to his frustration, a touch of wildness to his carefully disciplined life. She was his best friend, his confidant and in many ways, his truest family...that wasn't blood. They'd grown up together, their lives intertwined even when miles and careers separated them. For Andrea, Max was her protector, someone who understood her in ways no one else could. She stood by him through the long years of sacrifice, brutal training and relentless demands imposed by his dad. In return, Max was her grounding force, her laughter and her safety net. He knew every dream she held close and every scar she tried to hide.
But lately, things had changed. Andrea's laughter had slightly faded, replaced by a smile that never quite reached her eyes. A darkness had settled over her life, one Max could sense but couldn't quite place. She was caught in the wraps of a relationship that dimmed her shine, but she didn't seem to see it. Or maybe she didn't want to. And as Max shouldered the pressures of being on the cusp of a fourth championship, the weight of his dad's expectations and the watchful eyes of the world seemed heavier than ever.
Their bond had endured distance and time, but could it survive the storm of Andrea's unspoken pain and Max's unrelenting pressure? What happens when the one who had always been there to protect, now needs saving and the one who needs saving can't admit they're lost?
