This is a longer story, enjoy! 👀
-------------------------------------

I've never been the type to let people in easily. Too many walls built up over the years, a steel castle no one's managed to breach. And I'm fine with that. Happy, even. It's just that other people don't seem to get it. Especially my little best friend Oscar, who's obsessed with the idea of setting me up with someone. He's always talking about somehow pushing me out of my  "shell."

He just doesn't get that I'm fine the way I am. "April, it wouldn't kill you to be nice to someone," he nags at me again, in his drivers room.

"Just try to enjoy working in F1, meet new people. This is an incredible opportunity to work for Mercedes. You don't have to date anyone, just...talk to someone! Make some friends, maybe?"

Friends. Right. Because those have worked out so well for me in the past. I roll my eyes, scrolling through my phone as I sit in on his couch.

"Oscar, you've been dating your high school sweetheart since forever. Don't start talking to me like some life coach. I'm fine without a boyfriend. Or friends, for that matter."

He huffs, clearly not convinced, before storming off to his garage. I trail behind him, outside of the motorhome only to run into Logan Sargeant. He's that guy who's just...everywhere. You know the type...laid-back, cool, always has the perfect thing to say without trying too hard.

Everyone seems to like him, and for some reason, he's recently started showing up wherever I go. He's always out and about in the paddock when I am, or we've crossed paths in Mercedes hospitality getting the same coffee. It's weird. Suspicious, even. I'm not stupid. Something's up. But the thing that throws me is that Logan actually talks to me. Not in that forced way most guys try to when they want something from me. He's casual, like it's no big deal, like he's not trying to crack some code to get to me.

"Hey, April," he says, walking alongside me like it's totally normal. He has a laid back smile, one that would make any other girl's heart race. I'm not impressed. I don't even look up from my phone as I head to Mercedes.

"Hey." "What are you doing?" I sigh, putting down my phone.

"What do you want, Logan?"

"Just curious. Is it illegal to talk to you now?" I narrow my eyes at him, waiting for the catch. There's always a catch with guys like him. But he keeps walking with me, patient, like he's really waiting for an answer.

"Fine," I say finally. "I'm trying to find a dress for this event I have to go to with the team. It's a formal banquet happening in a few weeks. Happy?"

He grins, and it's annoyingly charming. "Yeah. I think you'd look nice in green."

I stop, taken off guard by the compliment. "Uh, thanks?" That's when I notice something strange, he doesn't seem fazed by my usual sarcasm. It's like he actually enjoys it. And that's how it starts.

For the rest of the day Logan keeps popping up, making small talk, acting like he genuinely wants to be around me. I can't figure out his angle, and it drives me insane. But there's something else, too, something that I don't want to admit. I kind of...don't hate it.

A couple weeks go by, and Logan doesn't let up. Oscar is thrilled because apparently, Logan's his other best friend aside from me on the grid and he wants us to get on. I'm still suspicious, but he hasn't done anything to make me hate him...yet. On the day of the Mercedes event, I was leaving the paddock, and Logan jogged up beside me, his bag slung over one shoulder.
