"So what is going on with you and Hazel?" Steve asked as him and Dallas walked to the Curtis house together, "What do you mean?" Dallas said as he was getting flustered just by hearing her name, "Do you like her?" Steve said, "What? No! Absolutely not!" Dallas said offended.
"Really? Just by bringing up her name, you got pretty red," Steve said, "Who got pretty red?" Sodapop asked, "Dallas has a crush on Hazel," Steve said, "Oh man, who wouldn't, she's gorgeous, you ain't the only guy that likes her Dal," Sodapop said, "Really?" "Yeah, I had a crush on her a while back, same with Twobit," Steve said.
"Then what do I do, I did ask her to date me and-" "When?" Sodapop asked as he interrupted Dallas, "Yesterday," "And what did she say?" Steve asked, "She said that I needed to change-" "Ha! Oh man, you're outta luck, you ain't never dating her!" Sodapop said laughing.
"What do you mean?" Dallas said concerned, "Dal, you and I both know that you aren't ever gonna change, even if you did, she still won't get with you, it's better to just hang as friends now," Steve said, "Well, we did hang out last night," "What?" Sodapop said, "Shit, maybe you do have a chance, but be careful, a girl like that is gonna play hard to get," Steve said.
"So how crazy are you for her?" Sodapop asked, "Shut up," Dallas said, "Are you like a one out of ten meh, or ten out of ten like putting photos of her on your wall?" Sodapop kept on going, "Can you shut up? She right there," Dallas said as he saw Hazel walking towards the house.
"Yeah, he's definitely ten out of ten," Steve said, "I'm gonna punch the shit outta both of you if you guys don't shut up," Dallas said, "Hey, remember? You have to change!" Sodapop said, "Soda, shut up," Dallas said as Hazel walked up to the boys.
"What are you guys talking about?" Hazel asked, "Just about girls and cars, nice jacket by the way," Sodapop said as he walked away and to the house, "Also like the way you did your hair today Hazel," Steve said as he followed Sodapop, "The fuck was that about?" Hazel questioned Dallas.
"Who knows at this point," Dallas said, "Anyways, what did you wanna do?" Hazel asked, "I just wanted to stay here for a bit since this whole Johnny situation has been crazy," Dallas said, "You ain't wrong, the cops came to my house last night." Hazel said, "And what did you say?"
"I said that I've never met Johnny in my life, they believed it," Hazel said with a smile, causing Dallas to smile too, "Let's get inside the house before it becomes too hot outside," Dallas said.
"Hey guys," Darry said as Dallas and Hazel walked into the house, "What's going on? Why are you home?" Hazel asked, "They let me off until Pony comes back," Darry said, "Oh, well that's nice!" Hazel said as she sat on the couch.
"Cops have been everywhere lately, can't go anywhere without having to stop to talk to them," Twobit said as he drank some beer, "Yeah, crazy world we live in," Hazel said, "You want a beer Hazel?" Sodapop asked, "I'm okay, but thanks for the offer," Hazel said with a smile.
"So, Hazel, how have you been?" Steve asked as he sat next to her, "Pretty good to be honest, how about you?" "Let's just talk about you for a bit, have you been seeing anyone lately?" "Uh, no? Why?" Hazel questioned, "So, you haven't been hanging with anyone lately?" "Well, the only person that I've been getting along with is Dal."
"Really? I would've never guessed!" Steve said, acting surprised, "Okay Steve, beat it," Dallas said, causing Steve to leave the couch so Dallas can sit next to her, "What was that about?" Hazel whispered, "It's Steve, what do you expect," Dallas whispered back.
"You're not wrong," "Hazel, can I tell you something?" "Sure, what's up?" "I just wanted to say that-" "Okay, you two are hogging the couch, scoot!" Twobit said, causing Dallas and Hazel to move over, making Twobit sit in the middle.
"I'm surprised that a lot of you guys are okay with everything that's been going on," Hazel said to Twobit, "Well, I am since I know that they're safe in Texas, but Darry and Soda are definitely not doing good," Twobit said, "Really? So you also know that they're in Texas?" Hazel said to Twobit, but was looking at Dallas.
"Yeah, I wanted to go over there but Dally told me not to," Twobit said, "Really?" Hazel said, getting mad, "Yeah, just hoping when this whole thing blows over that they get back safe. In the meantime, I'm gonna drink more beer," Twobit said as he got up from the couch.
"So you're lying to these guys?" Hazel whispered, "What else did you want me to do Hazel?" Dallas scoffed, "Tell the truth so they can stop worrying?" "No, I ain't doing that," Dallas said, "Hm, okay!" Hazel said as she got up, "Where are you going?" Dallas asked, "Away from you since you lie about everything," Hazel said as she walked out the door.
"Shit," Dallas said as he got up and followed her out the door, "I didn't wanna make them even more worried with where Johnny and Pony are staying at! You gotta understand that Hazel," Dallas said, "Yeah, but you couldn't have told Darry or Soda where their little brother is at?" Hazel said as she continued to walk.
"Why haven't you told them then?" "Because it ain't my place to tell Dal! I wasn't the one that helped them run away. This on you, all on you! And it's your place to tell them where they're at!" Hazel said, stopping to turn around and look at Dallas, "How about tomorrow we go get them? Me and you," Dallas said in a soft tone.
Hazel didn't know what to say. She really didn't want to go get the boys since it's not her place to be in this situation. Yet, seeing Johnny again wouldn't be so bad. Hazel then looked up at Dallas and made eye contact with his chestnut eyes. That eye contact made her calmer with the tension between her and Dallas
"Fine, I will come with you to get the boys, but for now, I'm gonna go home," Hazel said as she started walking away, "You want me to walk you home?" Dallas asked, "No, it's fine, I'll see you later," Hazel said as she walked a bit faster.
Hazel walked in the house with seeing her grandpa and grandma in the kitchen together. "Hey guys," Hazel said, catching both of their attention, "Hey Hazy! What are you doing back so early?" Donna asked, "It's very hot outside, thought that I should cool off," Hazel said.
"Well, your grandma cut some watermelon if you want some," Ron said, "I'll have some later, I just need to rest," Hazel said as she sat on the couch. As soon as she rested her head back, the front door swung open, causing her to swiftly move her head up. It was Jesse.
"Jesus Christ! You scared me Jesse," Hazel said with a laugh, "Sorry! It's just super hot out and this is the only house I know of that's actually cold," Jesse said as she closed the door, "So, how was your day so far Jesse?" Donna asked, "It was okay, nothing too exciting," Jesse said as she sat next to Hazel.
"I get that, it's hard to have fun when it's this hot," Ron said, "Yeah, but, there's a party happening tonight at the park," Jesse said, "I would love to go but I have to help out with something," Hazel said, "And what do you have to help out with?" Donna said.
"Oh, just something at the Curtis's," Hazel lied, "How many times do I have to say no-" "Donna, I told her to help," Ron said, "I don't like this game you're playing Ron," Donna said as she stormed into her room, "It's just the heat," Ron said as he chased after her.
"Wanna go do something?" Jesse asked, "I would, but I have to actually help Dal with getting Johnny and Pony back. We were thinking about getting the car ready today so we can leave early in the morning," Hazel whispered, "What? Are you guys like a thing now?" Jesse whispered.
"No," "Why not?" "Uh, because Donna's my grandma?" "Okay, yeah she's strict, why don't you guys just secretly date then?" "No, absolutely not, he doesn't even like me, he's just acting nice so he could play me," Hazel said as she rested her head back, "I'm gonna be honest with you Hazel, I think he really likes you," Jesse said.
"I don't really care if he does, lots of guys like me. He isn't the first," Hazel said as she crossed her arms, "Yeah, but do you hang out with the guys that like you?" Jesse asked as she raised her eyebrow, "I mean, I actually don't like Dal, but he's been so nice to me, yet he's a cunt to anyone else," Hazel said as she sat up. "Therefore he likes you," Jesse said, "You're annoying," Hazel said laughing.
