TW: torture. injury, interrogation, murder, drugging
It had been a few days, and absolutely nothing had changed. I'd get taken out and "interrogated," then go back to my cell, then they'd throw Alvar in, then take him somewhere I could hear him screaming. Repeat.
Alvar and I get to be in the same cell for at least a few hours every day, and he always comes back more injured, granted I do too. He told me that they were asking him questions about his own parents and their relationship with mine, which stumped us both. We didn't know of any way that our parents would've known about each other. Della and Alden had lived in Eternalia all their lives, and my parents had always lived in the United States and Mexico.
No matter what, we couldn't figure out what was going on. I tried to outsmart Bug and Stinky, get them to talk, but they didn't tell me anything. Alvar reported back the same with the people interrogating him.
"I just don't get it." I told him for the millionth time. "We don't know what they're talking about, why do they keep asking? Why can't they just understand that we don't know?"
"They have to think we're lying." He said. "But... what'll they do when they find out we actually don't know anything? There's no way they're letting you go back, since you're supposed to be dead, and I would tell everyone." He looked at me, what he was going to say next was clear in his eyes. "They'll kill us. We have to get out of here as soon as possible."
"Times up!" Stinky announced as he opened the door. I didn't even try to fight him as he dragged Alvar out the door, there was nothing I could do with my hands behind my back. I couldn't even cover my ears against his screams and cries of pain. I just had to wait it out, then it'd be my turn.
"We did everything your parents said, Sophie. Why isn't it working?" Bug asked. He was the only one that didn't resort to torture. He just questioned me, and I was so grateful for that. Wait no, I can't be grateful for him just because he doesn't hurt me! That's not how it works, I shouldn't even be getting hurt at all. I should be safe at home with my friends and family.
"I don't even know what you did to me!" I shouted. "I don't know what my parents 'said' to do, I don't know what it's supposed to do, and I don't know why it's not working!"
"Okay, okay." He said, putting his hands up. "I'd try to help your memory along, but I'm not allowed to tell you what's going on. So I'm sorry, but you're gonna have to think about it. Really think about it." He put both his hands on the arms of the chair I was tied to, looking into my eyes. "Is there anything sketchy about your parents you can think of? Anything at all. Secrets they kept from you, times they shut you out of a room to talk, anything like that?"
I thought for a minute before looking back at him. "There was this one time... they sent me to my friend's house for a sleepover, but they arranged the whole thing saying I needed to go. And then... nine months later my sister was born." He recoiled as I smiled in what I hope was an evil manner. Even though I didn't know anything, I still wasn't going to make it easy on them.
Bug stormed over to the door and threw it open. "Give her back! Please can we just give her back." He sounded like he was about to cry. I heard another voice, whoever was outside of the room, yell "no!" Bug slammed the door shut and stomped back towards me.
"You have to know something. Please, Sophie. It'd be so much easier if you just told us the truth." I looked him dead in the eyes.
"I don't know anything. That is the truth. My parents were really secretive, they didn't share anything with me. So whatever you want with me, you have to figure it out on your own. You can bet that if I did know something, Vespera would know already. I would've told her just to get her to stop." He nodded along as I didn't break eye contact with him the entire time. I thought I finally got it across that I was telling the truth, until he threw a bag back over my head and dragged me out of the room.
