TW: drugging, injury, starvation,
When I woke up, it was all at once and not at all. I couldn't tell how long I'd been out, or how long I was floating in that state of semi-consciousness where I could only hear what was going on around me. Then I'd be out again.
It happened a few times, where whatever drugs I was on would lessen up, but they almost always immediately strengthened again. I immediately forgot what was said around me as soon as the drugs kicked in again.
I felt as they started to lessen again. It felt more sudden than the other times I could remember. Loud voices flooded my ears, making me wince except for the fact that I couldn't move.
"It... working." I strained my ears to hear what was being said. It was so weird, like I was unconscious but awake, I could hear but I couldn't move, and I could think just fine.
"Nothing we've done has triggered it." I could finally hear the allergy lady's voice clearly. "No matter what we do to her, how many experiments we run, even when we let her escape. There's been no changes at all."
"Maybe it was wrong, or we were." Bug's voice cracked awkwardly, like a teenage boy during puberty. "They might not have had time to give it to her, or she could be the wrong person."
"No, it was very clearly her. Besides, it said she was a baby. That's when it started. And haven't you seen the bills and receipts? It's definitely her. And it wasn't the baby, that's for sure. We wouldn't have killed her if there was a chance it was her."
I couldn't have possibly been more confused. I just wanted answers, but they weren't saying anything clearly enough. What was it that I supposedly had? And even if I did have it, why did they want it, and to "trigger" it so bad?
"Why their own kid though? I don't have kids and I still would never even dream of doing this to them. Why couldn't they have found someone else, someone other than her?"
"You know it has to start at birth, so either way they would've been subjecting a baby to it without its consent. Maybe they would've rather done it to their child so they could help her through it, rather than some random child that didn't know what was going on."
"Okay... but then why isn't it working still? They put in all that work, had all that research and experiments in the journal, and we've followed all their plans. There's gotta be some way to trigger it."
"I don't know, but we have to go. I'll send Alvar in, and we can have him up the drugs." I heard their footsteps leave, then another pair approached. Suddenly, all the fogginess in my mind disappeared, and I could slightly move my limbs and open my eyes.
"Sophie?" I looked up to see Alvar's familiar cobalt eyes. But, he was wearing the same gear as the kidnappers.
"A-Alvar?" I croaked. My throat felt rough and dry. "What's going on?" He trailed my eyes to his outfit.
"Oh! Don't worry, I'm not actually with them, I promise. They gave me an offer, I could start working for them and work my way to them trusting me, or stay in a cell or drugged up like you. So I thought this would be the best way to help us escape."
"Why do they let you be alone with me though? No matter how much time passed, wouldn't they suspect something?" His mouth quirked up in a tiny smirk.
"They think they brainwashed me." I stared him dead in the eyes.
"That doesn't make any sense."
"Yeah I don't really know, but they hooked me up to this thing and then they started saying a bunch of things, like 'you answer to us', and stuff like that, then they unhooked it and acted like I was completely one of them. I think that they're pretty dumb."
