"Hello?"
"Hi." Sophie's voice was just as crackly as the one she responded to on call.
"Miss Foster!" Forkle's voice instantly became brighter. "I'm so happy to hear that you're back and safe. Now I don't know if you remember, you seemed to have just been sedated, but I did visit you in the hospital."
"Yes Mr. Forkle, I remember that, and thank you so much. I actually wanted to talk to you about it, specifically what you helped me with." Her voice grew cautious. I put my hand on her shoulder in support.
"Is there anybody with you?" I noted the suspicion that laced his voice.
"Dex. You said I could trust him." A sigh came from the other side of the phone.
"Yes but I didn't realize you'd tell people this soon. Knowing you, I would've thought you'd try to solve this by yourself first."
"Well... I accidentally hurt one of my friends in front of everyone, using one of the powers." Her voice cracked again from the guilt.
"It wasn't your fault, you know this." I whispered so Forkle couldn't hear. She just nodded.
"So, all my friends know the basics but Dex and Keefe know all the details. Anyways, I want you to tell me about it. The powers, what my parents did. I want to know how to get rid of them." We waited a few seconds for a response, only for the call to end with a beep.
"Does that mean he's not going to help?" I asked. He better help, after all this is putting my cousin through. She explained to me what Forkle told her in the hospital, how he helped her put a block on her mind reading. That meant he had to know, he had to be able to help her. He might've even been the person to give her the powers.
Sophie inhaled sharply, her eyes squeezed shut. My eyebrows furrowed in concern at her pained expression. She didn't look like she was breathing.
"Sophie? What's going on?" I asked, my voice coming out rushed and panicked.
"My head hurts, really bad." She grabbed her hair at the scalp, like she was on the verge of ripping it out.
"Migraine?" I asked, remembering when she'd lay in the dark with a heat pack over her eyes due to the intense pains.
"No." She moved the heels of her hands to her eyes. "Worse."
Suddenly she stiffened, going silent and dropping her hands. Her eyes were blank as her feet lifted off the ground. She rose an inch, then two, while I stood there in shock. I didn't even see what happened with Biana, just the after effect, but I was seeing this now. She was actually flying, actually using her powers. It was unbelievable.
I grabbed onto her as she kept lifting, eyes staring into nothing. I was hoping to drag her down, keep her on the ground, but all that happened was I started rising with her.
I felt my heart beating out of my chest as the ground got too far away for me to let go, and I'm sure Sophie would've been able to hear the rapid thudding if she wasn't in whatever weird trance she was in.
"Sophie, Sophie!" I shouted in her ear, trying to snap her out of it. This wasn't smart, why did I grab onto her? Now we're both going to die.
Suddenly, when we were almost high enough to touch the lowest clouds, and the air was thin enough that I could hardly breathe, we dropped.
I screamed and screamed and screamed until my voice broke as we started gaining speed, dropping faster and faster and faster.
